Thank you! I previously had Hellen, but hadn't found my 2nd source to confirm her details. This stuff is SO addictive!

Wow - I certainly have lots to look at and figure out. Thanks to both of you for your help! I will let you know how it goes. I am going to order some birth certificates to cross references above info and what I have already gathered.

it's funny because I always thought my dad's side was Irish. Doing this search I learned his family had only been in Ireland a couple of years when he was born, and that they were from Cumberland. And his mom's family is the McClure's. So I started searching Belfast, then Cumberland and now Scotland! My head is spinning!

I found this source to look up Hugh's church birth records or baptism https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/23322?availability=Family%20History%20Library I will make time to check it out at my local library.

Monica - thank you! What jumped out at me straight away is your mention of (Alexander) Rowan. On two census entries for Hugh and Alice/Alicia I was stumped to see two young kids with last name of Rowan. I didn't know if they were visiting or? Until I found the 1841 census with Hugh and Alicia and this:
John Roan Male 7, born 1834 Scotland
Anne Roan Female, 3,  born 1838 Scotland
Then, on the 1851 census John is the only Rowan, (now spelled this way) with Hugh and Alicia. Which other family tree did you find their dad on?

As for your question about source for birth dates for Hugh and Alice/Alicia - I can only use the census at this point as I have no birth records, working on it. But, I did find this from the Workington page of Roots Web which confirms Alice's maiden name you gave me:
McClure, Hugh 78y
 Old Luce #18, Hugh McCLURE, , Pauper, formerly Farmer aged 78 years born Ballantrae Parish, lived Old Luce 10y.  Parents were John McCLURE, Farmer deceased and Mary McCLURE maiden surname NIMMA deceased.  Wed to 'Allice' MILNAE.  Children were Marg't dead aged 9y in 1811.  Annabella 42.  John 40.  Eliza 38.  'Margret' 35.  Died Mar 21, 5:30am at Dampark, Old Luce of Influenza & Bronchitis duration about 3w.  Certifieed by William McCORNACK, Surgeon who saw deceased 10 Mar.  Buried Glenluce Churchyard , certified by John McKIE, Undertaker.  Informant was John McCLURE, Son.  Registered Mar 22 at Glenluce, John ROSS, Registrar.

Thank you so much for your reply! I hope that Evenlina sees this. It looks like she hasn't posted in some time.

McClure/McLure - Old Monkland. The spelling changed with various branches of the family starting with John McClure and his first wife Sarah Collins, their 5 children, then his 2nd wife Mary McMillan and their 11 children.

John born c 1812 wigtownshire died 1880 Old Monkland, he appears to have moved to the area for work from at least 1842 although he flitted back and forward to Kilwinning for a while.

1st wife Sarah Collins, details unknown, died poss before 1851 not on census, no trace John or Sarah 1841 census.

Children Alexander c 1836 Muirkirk - 1909 Airdrie;
David c1939 Muirkirk - 1912 Coatbridge (my direct relative);
Helen c 1842 Old Monkland - 1903 Coatbridge, married name 1st Hannah then 2nd Morgan;
John c 1844 Bothwell - 1915 Kilmarnock; He used the McLure spelling.
Agnes c1846 Old Monkland - unknown.

I have info on the above children and their marriages and their families except Agnes but I am always looking to fill in any gaps so if you are related please contact me.  I am also happy to pass on any info I have.

I also have a lot of info on John's 2nd set of children with Mary.  James 1854, Thomas 1855, Agnes 1857, Robert 1860, Mary 1862, Ann 1865, Margaret 1867, Jane 1869, Jemima 1872, Issac 1874 & Robert 1875.

Thomas, 1st Robert & Mary born Kilwinning rest of family Old Monkland.  Cheers Evelina

Hi! I have just started my family tree but have a McClure branch I am working on from my dad's side. I am originally from Manchester, UK, and dad's side of family has McClure's.

So far I have:
Hugh McClure, born 1776, Kirkowan, Wigtonshire
Wife, Alicia, born 1772  - town?
Son, John, Born in 1817, Ayr
His son, Alexander, born 1836, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire
On 1851 census John is shown as widower with son Alexander 15, David 12, and John age 6. And they are all listed as born in Ayr - this throwing me off, not sure if this is a different branch?
Alexander's son, James born 1860
James's daughter, Lavinia, born 1880 - she was my grandmother

I have seen many American threads referencing a David McClure who emigrated. And it appears this branch is not my direct line. Again, I am not American, I am Brit born. I need to do more work on the above as I feel I may have some errors as I am new to this and don't have much time to devote to it, and sometimes a couple of weeks pass before I get back to it. I am afraid I might be making errors.

Do you think we have common ancestors or simply some of the same names which were very common at that time?
