Try National Library of Scotland for old maps of the UK

I think I replied in messages instead of here. So, to repeat, many thanks for your suggestion.

Wow, Diddy, thanks so much for responding under the circumstances :o. I'll check this out - meanwhile I wish you a very speedy recovery.

Loughborough library hold some detailed maps for the area as well as records.

Sorry I can't go & look as just had kidney transplant yesterday! Amazing.

Thank you for the suggestions, BumbleB. I'll contact the parish council and, in the meantime, have a look at the Francis Frith site. Christine

[/quote]Just a thought - have you tried to contact the parish council?

Or this company for old maps:

Thank you very much, David. I need to subscribe to Old Maps as, without that, I'm not able to zoom in sufficiently. But I'll consider doing that if I can't find the information elsewhere. Christine

Are there any detailed street maps of Breedon on the Hill from, say, 1845 to 1900? I'm looking in particular for Chapel Street and Fishpool Street (1881 census) where my ancestors lived.  I can see on the maps I have that there was a Methodist Chapel, and I understand that the War Memorial now stands on part of the green formerly known as Fish Pool.  So I can guess at the approximate location of each, but it would be a bonus to see where the actual streets were.

Any help would be very much appreciated - thank you.

(ii) I wasn't suggesting that Arimatige was a transcription error -

I assumed you were, since your topic was headed Findmypast transcription errors  :)

Fair assumption, but I'd intended to 'kill two birds with one stone', and hopefully offer some advice to other researchers who might be experiencing similar problems :D

Just for the record, there are two issues here:

(i) there are a lot of transcription errors on Findmypast but, as I said, I'm very grateful to the transcribers; and

(ii) I wasn't suggesting that Arimatige was a transcription error - just that a researcher needs to be a little 'clever' if they can't find a name.  I used this as an example of how rearranging the letters can throw up an entirely different result (and also using Keyboard86's suggestion above).
