United States of America / Update - MALONEY family
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi, everybody! I'm sorry I haven't been on here in a while. I think I hit a brick wall in researching  Doyle's side of the family, so I've left it alone for a while.  I am, however, finding more success in researching the Maloney family. :-)  Who knew that some of them moved to the upper Midwest from Vermont (Minnesota, to be specific) and that others moved to Maryland?

I'm not asking a question, actually, but I'm thinking Margaret Doyle's maiden name was Gorman, not Nolan. Is it possible that the Doyles weren't born in Wicklow, Wexford, or Carlow? Margaret Doyle, born Margaret Gorman in 1801, might have been born in King's County and raised there.

I'm still doing research on my Doyle ancestors, John and Margaret, whose great-grandson is my great-grandfather, Thomas Edward Lewis Kemp, since he himself had some Irish heritage and was raised as a Catholic. I found out, although I'm still trying to verify, that the Doyles and the Gormans lived or grew up in County Offaly, which was originally known as King's County, in Ireland, according to the Irish census of 1821.  John and his older brother, Patrick, lived in Birr, King's County, whereas Margaret Doyle, born Margaret Gorman, in 1801, might have lived in Letterluna, Sisken, King's County, Ireland. I could be wrong, though.  John Doyle, Sr. died in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, whereas Bridget died in Shillelagh, County Wicklow, Ireland, thirteen years apart.

The Lighter Side / Re: What where the worst things you had to endure as a child?

Gosh, other than seventh and eighth grade, which weren't exactly the best times of my life, I'd say having an impacted tooth removed in July 1986 was bad enough. The worst part of it was that after I had surgery to remove my impacted tooth, I fainted in the dentist's office in Amman! How embarrassing that was! Also, I had one classmate ask me why I had to go to our math teacher, Mrs. Droese, for extra help. I told her I just needed help with math, but I really felt like an idiot. Thankfully, she let it go at that.

I live in Jordan, which is in the Middle East. The information you have about Addie Wright Hollis is accurate. I might have to ask my mother to order the marriage certificate for Thomas Wright and Catherine Doyle.

Do you also include Ireland in RootsChat? I'm trying to verify where John Doyle, born about 1799, and his wife, Margaret, born about 1801 in Ireland, were married. I looked up Margaret Doyle's maiden name and where in Ireland she grew up, in the 1821 Census. It's possible that she lived in Lettertuna, Seskin, King's County (now County Offaly), in Ireland, and possibly married John Doyle there.

This Margaret Doyle gave also gave birth to Mary A. and Adeline Doyle in Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts in about 1830 and 1832. Ann Catherine was born in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts in about 1825, and not 1830, as I thought for the longest time.   The 1825 passenger list doesn't list her maiden name, though.

Have you tried Family Search or Ancestry.com? By the way, one of my great-grandmothers was born in Arbroath, Scotland; her name was Margaret Maxwell Laird. She, her mother, and siblings arrived in the U.S. in different years, but in the 1900s, and on different ships.  Some arrived in New York and others arrived in Boston.

I don't, but I could ask one of my maternal aunts, who has researched the Doyle, Wright, and Kemp lines. I wrote down the information from Family Search, though. It says that Mary married Arthur H. Kemp on August 14, 1876 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Her parents, Thomas and Catherine, are listed in the marriage records and so are her in-laws, Samuel Kemp and Annie M. Baldwin. This record, however, says she was born about 1857 and that she was 19.

Now, that's what stumps me. Christine. :-/

As far as I know, Thomas Wright was the father of Edward, Thomas, Adeline, and Mary. Mary was the mother of Thomas Edward Lewis Kemp, my great-grandfather. Thank you for helping me, though. :-)
