Hello, I realise that this is a rather old thread but I was fascinated to read that Dalaifarmer's family have lived at Little Morton Farm, Babworth since 1887. In 1891 my great grandmother's brother, William Lucas was living at Morton Farm as a groom. My great, great grandparents (William and Shady Lucas) and my great grandmother (Mary Jane Lucas) were living in Little Morton Cottages. Do they still exist? great great grandfather was an agricultural labourer so presumably at Little Morton Farm.

Occupation Interests / Re: Why did a pork Butcher just sell pork?
« on: Wednesday 22 June 22 14:51 BST (UK)  »
I just found this thread. I was Googling pork butchers because I've just been shopping in Leicester where pork butchers were a very popular thing up to the 70s. Walkers being probably the biggest and best know. They reopened their shop in Leicester a couple of years ago but it lasted almost no time before it closed again. The reason I was Googling it was that I noticed today there are at least two pork butchers still in the new indoor market so it does still thrive.
I wonder if all the pork butchers originated from the German ones? Walker is obviously not a German name.
In ansswer to the original question though, I would have guessed that there were specific pork butchers partly because pork has always been the cheapest meat so they would have catered to the working class population. Also, they were like the French charcutiers in that they cured pork and many many things from it.

Travelling People / Marshall and Colton in Nottinghamshire
« on: Friday 04 July 14 08:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I've just joined this group. I've been trying to find out for many years if there is any truth in the story my grandmother told me of her grandmother being a gypsy. My great great grandmother's name was Shady Colton, daughter of Caleb Colton and Sarah Marshall. They lived in Nottinghamshire and did not travel as far as I can see. I have all the info available from census returns and parish registers but can find no real clue as to Romany connections. The forename Shady is interesting. As well as my gt gt grandmother, her aunt and niece were also called Shady. I've given the name to my daughter. Does anyone know anything of these families?
