My guess is that either George Howe's parents (Samuel Howe & ?) or Mary Rossiter's parents (Henry Rossiter & Eliza Holloway) were related in some way to Samuel Haines Barrett's parents so I'm just trying to work out where in the hope that it might shed more light on the family.  It seems too much of a coincidence that Sarah Rossiter married Samuel Haines Barrett and that her sister, Mary Rossiter, would name her son, Samuel Haines Howe.  The South Australian colony was still pretty small and they all appear to be mining families.

Thanks, Shally.  Do you know if there is any connection on the Haines side with either Samuel Howe (I don't know where he was from) or with Henry James Rossiter and Eliza Holloway/Holdaway (Somerset).  I'm really trying to track down the Howe side before they arrived in Australia and given that Samuel's son, George Henry named his child, Samuel Haines Howe, it seems likely that there may have been a family link somewhere.

Hi Shally,
I'd be interested in what you may have discovered.  Samuel Hains Barrett married my great-grandmother's sister, Sarah Rossiter.  The interesting thing from my point of view is that my great-grandparents, Mary Ann Rossiter and George Henry Howe named one of their sons Samuel Haines Howe.  I'm wondering if there was an earlier family connection with the Haines/Hains family

Hi rcuser,
I'm new to Rootschat so I'm sorry for jumping in on this thread.  I think that I may have come across one of your old post re: Henry James Rossiter and his descendants.  He married Eliza Holloway in 1845? in Dunkerton, Somerset.  They turn up in Machen in the 1851 census with some children & Eliza's mother and brother.  After that I lose track of them.  I know that they migrated to South Australia sometime between 1851 and 1872 when their eldest daughter, Mary Ann Rossiter married George Henry Howe in Gawler.  Eliza died in 1888 in South Australia while her husband followed in 1901? (I don't have my notes with me so the question marks are in place of accurate memory.)  Has your research turned up any more information about this branch of the Rossiter family?
Regards

Hi,
I'm new to this so please forgive any mistakes.
I'm interested in finding out more about a number of different lines of my family tree but I'll start with the Rossiters.
I know that Henry James Rossiter married Eliza Holloway in Dunkerton, Somerset in 1846.  They appeared in Machen, Monmouthshire in the 1851 census, listed with some of their children & her mother & brother.
Sometime after that and prior to 1872, they emigrated to Australia and had more children.  One of their children, Mary Ann Rossiter, born approx. 1846 in Dunkerton, went on to marry George Henry Howe in 1872 in Gawler, South Australia.  These were my great-grandparents.
Eliza died in 1888 while Henry Rossiter lived until 13/7/1901 - both were buried at Cheltenham Cemetery in South Australia.
I would be very interested in any other information that other users might have.  I know that someone was querying this family a number of years ago on Rootschat - I don't seem to be able to track the original forum topic down.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
