In 1777 Richard Hopkins c1750 was granted a lease on 197 acres based on "his life".

This expired with his death in May of 1834.

Has anyone access to Cantwell's Memorials to the Dead?    I think Cantwell may have mis-transcribed age 84 as age 87.



Richard had a son Richard c1790? who was granted 76 acres of that lease after his father died.

In 1821 I think this was the Richard Hopkins who married Elizabeth Leybourne at Aghold, indicating he was of Ballard but a member of Carnew Parish.

In 1815 at Carnew Parish a Richard Hopkins and wife Susan baptized a son John , born Oct 29 1814.

In 1818, a Susan Hopkins was buried at Carnew, age 24.

I believe that this was Richard's wife and that he later married Elizabeth Leybourne. 



Can anyone confirm my speculations or add any information?

In 1816 Nicholas Hopkins of Gorey died leaving a Will.

Nicholas was a son of Benjamin and Mary (Leggett) Hopkins who held land at Tomacork in Wicklow. 

Nicholas was likely born about 1773.   A brother Benjamin died in 1812 and it is not known if he was married.   He was buried at Mullinacuffe with his father.

Nicholas c1773-1816 was unmarried but in his Will he provided for the training of a son of Ann Harris, a  boy "known as John Hopkins".  There are a couple of possibilities of why he made this provision...

a) This "John Hopkins was the illegitimate or adopted son of Nicholas?

b) This John Hopkins was a son of Ann Harris through a previous marriage to a Hopkins...most likely the Benjamin Hopkins who died in 1812.  IF this were the case, and "Ann" had remarried before 1816 it would explain why she was not buried with Ben Hopkins and why Nicholas provided for the training of a nephew.

In any case, one must assume that the John Hopkins in question was John Hopkins, born about 1800 who married a Sarah Cullen in Gorey in 1821.  He had been trained as a shoemaker (thanks to an Uncle Nich?).   This training likely commenced when he was about 16 or when Nicholas Hopkins of Gorey died, leaving a provision in his Will for the training of Ann Harris' son "known as John Hopkins".

In 1822 John and Sarah had a first son and named him Nicholas (after the uncle?).

In 1829 the couple had a son John who would marry Mary Buttle in 1852.   Mary, born 1822,  was a daughter of Thomas Buttle and wife Ann Hopkins.   Ann was a sister to Nicholas Hopkins of Gorey, and Ben Hopkins of Tomacork.

IF my "speculations" above are correct, John Hopkins and Mary Buttle would have been first cousins.  They emigrated to Canada in 1852.

IF ANYONE CAN CONFIRM THE ABOVE, IT WOULD BE GREAT.

Specifically I am tryin to find:

a) A baptism for John Hopkins c1800.   It would likely be at Gorey or perhaps Carnew.

b) A marriage for an Ann to a Harris or widow Hopkins to a Harris 1812-1816.   It would likely be at Gorey or perhaps Carnew.

Yes, I agree that Elizabeth Hopkins of Garryhasten was likely a spinster when she married Brownrigg in 1807 but several people have claimed she had previously been married to a Jacob Brownrigg.

Not sure where this information comes from.

Susannah Hopkins was a daughter of Nicholas Hopkins 1723-1787 and Sarah Browne and was born circa 1773.   She was likely born at Garryhasten in Wexford.

In 1792 she married a 2nd cousin, William Hopkins c1768- 1809 and they resided at Clonogan in Carlow, raising a family of 8 before William died in 1809.

Susannah appears to have remained at Clonogan as she is listed in the Tithes of 1837.

She died in 1844 at 71 and was buried at Clonegal.

This all seems consistent except.....

A Susannah Hopkins resident of ??  married a William Edwards of Glanashouk in 1817.   I think this would be Glennashouk, adjacent to Garryhasten, suggesting that this Susannah might have been from Garrryhasten.  This "could" suggest that she was actually a widow Susannah Hopkins...the same as above?

Does anyone have any idea who the 2nd? Susannah Hopkins was or what became of her after marriage to Edwards?

Is it possible that Susannah Hopkins, born at Garryhasten, returned there after the death of husband William Hopkins in 1809, married neighbour William Edwards of Glennashouk in 1817, but was somehow biried under her maiden name in 1844?
