The Common Room / Re: Sheila Oakley and a Norwegian Sailor
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 00:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Carla

I know your post was quite some time ago, back in 2008, however I am hoping that you will receive my reply.

Your great grandmother, Sheilah Evlyn Ismay Oakley, and my great grandmother, Joyce Oakley, were sisters. I read your post whilst I was searching the internet to find out what became of Cyril. I had not heard the story about the Norwegian sailor before, however our family knew it was not certain who his father was. We had been told he had gone to live with his grandparents, Clara & Percy Oakley after his mother's death, as did her daughter (Cyril's half sister) Cecily. Apparently Cecily and Cyril were close in childhood and I wonder if they kept in touch throughout their lives.

I would love to make contact with you and tell you what information I have about Sheilah and her family. I am also in contact with my great aunt who is a niece of Sheilah's and will be checking what information she might have.

I would love to know if you have tracked down anything further since 2008. Please let me know if you would like to get in touch.

Regards

Kathy

I don't have any of the birth certificates as yet. I wanted to try this forum before having to pay for any certificates. The marriage certificate of his daughter states that he is a broker. The death certificate of his wife Ann doesn't shed any light either - he was not the informant at the time of her death and it seems the family did not know much about him, he could have been deceased or they may have been estranged. The death certificate of his middle daughter Alice, has a word that looks like 'missing' underneath his name (very hard to read) at the time of her death in 1875 age 7. Also Ann & Francis are not buried together.
It looks like my next step will be to order a birth certificate for one of the daughters unless by some miracle someone pops up and tells me they know all about him.

I am looking for any information anyone might have on Francis Fitpatrick who married Ann Jack nee Murphy. They are my 3rd great grandparents. This is what I know:-

Ann Jane Murphy (her name on her marriage certificate to John Grey Jack) is also later referred to as Ann Elizabeth (as it appears on her death record). It appears that she was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1831 and moved, with her parents to Hobart, Australia in 1833 on a ship called “Strathfieldsaye”. Sometime around 1840 they moved and settled in Adelaide where they lived in Wakefield Street. Ann was one of around 13 siblings. She was 22 at the time of her marriage to John Grey Jack on the 14th July 1853 in Christchurch, Adelaide, South Australia. Their wedding announcement in the newspaper of the time makes mention of her father “Mr Murphy” but no mention of her mother.
John Grey Jack was an engraver living at Leigh Street, Adelaide, South Australia and he was 31 at the time of his marriage to Ann Murphy.
They had 3 children:-
1854 - Annie Elizabeth Jack born in Adelaide and died 1924 in Victoria
Married John Vickers Heily b 1839 Ireland d 1924 Victoria
1855 – William Jack born 4th Dec and died 9th Nov 1856 at the age of 11 months (William is buried at the West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide)
1857 – William John Gray Jack born in Adelaide and died 1860 at the age of 3 in Bendigo, Victoria.
John Grey Jack dies, tragically, on 17 April 1857 at the age of 35 only four years after his marriage to Ann. (see Trove newspaper article) It appears that Ann Jack (Murphy) left Adelaide after the death of her husband and relocated to Bendigo, Victoria where her second son died the same year as her husband. Her parents had also moved to Bendigo.
She then met and married?? (no date) Francis Fitzpatrick and they had 3 children:-
1865 – Lucy Blanche Fitzpatrick died 1955 in Albury, NSW
   Married Mark Herman Goldenberg 1892-1926
1868 – Alice Maud Fitzpatrick died 1875 Collingwood, Vic at the age of 7 from malignant scarlet fever
1869 – Frances Eugene Fitzpatrick who died in 1944 in Canberra ACT
   Married Charles Harold Cornish 1868-1944
Ann Fitzpatrick nee Murphy, dies in 1900 in Collingwood Vic and is buried in a single grave with her grandson George H Cornish (who died at the age of 10 in 1903 from drowning and was the brother of her son in law, Charles Harold Cornish) and Ronald Exel (the foster child of her daughter Frances Eugene & Charles Harold Cornish, who died at the age of 3 in 1916, from an infectious disease).

On the death record of their daughter Alice Maud Fitzpatrick - Francis is listed as a Broker and on the death record of his wife, Ann Fitzpatrick, he seems to be listed as "missing". I do not have any other dates and don't seem to be able to find any records regarding Francis at all. Does anyone know anything about this man.  Have found some Trove newspaper notices for a Francis Fitzpatrick but so far have not been able to tie any of them in for certain.

Hi
Unlike Victorian, Australian records, the Tasmanian marriage and death certificates do not list the parents names. Very unfortunate and  frustrating.

Thanks Ros
Thanks for all the information. I am a member of Ancestry.com and so I already have all of the above information. What I really need is some information about their parentage in Ireland. So far I have been unable to complete the puzzle.
kind regards
Kathy

I am searching for the Downey family connected to the following Downey girls who came to Tasmania in the 1850's.
Catherine and Mary Downey were sisters arriving in Tasmania, as servants, on board the William Hammond in 1854. The ship records indicate they had 1st and 2nd cousins in Melbourne Victoria Australia and that their native place was Killkenny, Ireland. Mary settled in Tasmania and married John Paice. Not sure what happened to Catherine.
Another sister, Anne, arrived in 1857 - sponsored by her sister Mary. She also settled in Tasmania and married Richard Hanslowe. I have not been able to locate their parents or the cousins living in Melbourne. Does anyone have any information or leads?? :-[
