Dear Strachan, Gadget and anyone else interested in this thread.
I’ve recently acquired some more information about my great grandfather George Walker.
The birth of his illegitimate son James in April 1896 was made a declaration of court in August 1896, which lists George’s address as 90 John Street, Aberdeen.
Aberdeen District - Old Machar Parish
County of Aberdeen
In the Fourth Column of Entry No 676 in the Register Book of Births for the year 1896 before the name of the Child's mother insert George Walker, Slater on the authority of a Certificate in the form of Schedule (Y) to the following effect.
In an Action relating to the paternity of a Male child born 21st April 1896 at the instance of Mrs Eliza ? Hardie or Paterson, Widow 123 Huntly Street, Aberdeen against George Walker, Slater of 90 John Street Aberdeen the Sheriff of Aberdeen, Kincardine and Banff on the 19th August 1896 found that the said child was the illegitimate child of the parties aforesaid.
August 26th 1896 at Aberdeen
James Weston Registrar
I have also discovered another illegitimate child, born several years earlier to a MARY BROWN (who was b.11-Jan-1859 in KEIG and died on 15-Jan-1903 at Royal Infirmary, St Nicholas, ABERDEEN) named GEORGINA BROWN or THOMSON, b.6-Jun-1890 at Roy's Property, INSCH.
GEORGINA BROWN or THOMSON shows up on the 1901 census of Inverurie, as living with her grandmother, Jane or Jean Fyfe.
The 1901 Scotland Census:
Registration District 204, Enumeration District 4, Page 22
119 Sephook Place, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
2 rooms with one or more Windows
WALKER, Jane, Head, Married, Female, 60, born Kincardineshire Banchory Ternan
WALKER, Mary A., Daur, Single, Female, 26, General Domestic Serv, born Aberdeenshire Inverurie
THOMSON, Georgina, Grand Daur, Female, 10, Scholar, born Aberdeenshire Insch
SOUTER, John, Boarder, Single, Male, 18, Carpenter‚s Apprentice, Worker, born Aberdeenshire Monymusk
This doesn't actually confirm that George is Georgina's father, but just that Jane FYFE is her grandmother, however, GEORGINA BROWN or THOMSON’S 1909 marriage certificate claims that GEORGE WALKER, a slater (Jour.) is her father.
If this is the same GEORGE WALKER who was the father of my grandfather James, then he’s a bit of a character!
His parental family were:
JOSEPH WALKER married JANE (JEAN) FYFE on 5-Jun-1852 at Chapel of Garioch, KINTORE, ABERDEEN
Children: The children of Joseph Walker and Jane Fyfe:
1. i. DAVID WALKER b.14-Apr-1853 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
2. ii. JAMES WALKER b.10-Apr-1855 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
3. iii. WILLIAM WALKER b.7-Jan-1857 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
4. iv. JESSIE WALKER b.13-Apr-1859 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
5. v. JANE DAVIDSON WALKER b.19-Jul-1864 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
6. vi. ROBERT WALKER b.18-Jul-1865 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
+ 7. vii. GEORGE WALKER b.22-Dec-1868 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
8. viii. MARY ANN WALKER b.29-Jul-1871 in INVERURIE, ABERDEEN
Gadget, I did actually download several censi 1891 and 1901 and have narrowed it down, by age to about 8 George Walkers, however only one is a ‘stonecutter’ and he is about 10 years too old and none of them were from Inverurie. If you like, I could send them separately?
If anyone could find any more info of the above it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards all,
Julia Thompson
