Australia / Re: Ballarat Hotels

Hi,

I've been researching the Bute Hotel because my ancestor, Eliza Williams had the license in 1866. I've found a description that said it had two parlors, four bedrooms, a kitchen and out houses.

Was Elizabeth's first husband William Smith? If so, I think he assaulted Eliza Williams in 1865.

There's a web site about Ballarat pubs: https://ballaratpubs.miraheze.org/wiki/Bute_Hotel_(Peel_Street)

Hi Julie,

I was able to visit the townlands where the Craig family earlier this year.

Do you know much about David Craig's other wife, Ann Wilson? I think she and Samuel Craig's wife, also a Wilson, might have been related. Do you have her marriage certificate and death certificate?

I've got quite a few certificates relating to Samuel Craig and his children so happy to exchange.

Penny

Hi Julie,

Samuel Craig and Eliza Jane Wilson were my great-grandparents, their daughter Estella May Craig was my grandmother.

How do you connect?

Down / Re: George Murphy, distiller

Thanks for that. Where did you search?

I have checked this convict George Murphy previously. He can't be the father of Elizabeth Murphy, since he's only two years older, and he can't be her brother as his parents' names are different.
Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of Murphys about!

Would there be local records in Newry that might mention George Murphy?

Down / George Murphy, distiller
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 00:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm interested in finding out more about a distiller, probably from Newry, called George Murphy.

George's daughter, Elizabeth Murphy, aged 18, was convicted of larceny in Down in 1840 and transported to Tasmania. On arrival Elizabeth said she was from Newry. Her death certificate says her mother's name was Mary Ann Kavanagh.

I've checked for George Murphy in the following, but he's not mentioned.

The General Directory of Newry, Armagh, and the Towns of Dungannon, Banbridge, Portadown. Warrenpoint, Tandragee, Rosstrevor, Lurgan, Kilkeel, Waringstown, Rathfriland, &c. for 1820

Can anyone suggest other sources for finding out more about George Murphy?

Thanks,

Penny (in Melbourne, Australia)

kingskerswell, thanks for you help.

I've had a look at this: https://www.townlands.ie/derry/keenaght/aghanloo/ballycastle/

but I can't picture what this townland would be like, so wondered if, with your local knowledge you could briefly describe it. Is it all farmland? Is there a village? Industries? Is there a large home that might have had a butler?

Cheers,

Penny

Thanks Jack,

That's a kind offer. I have the death certificates of both Charles and Margaret, who was a Mrs Linard when she died. What I've never found is a definite record of William Mullin's death. I suspect he died in Violet Town in the early 1860s, but his death does not seem to have been registered.

Cheers,

Penny

James Mullin is described as:

1855 - a farmer on Margaret's marriage certificate, and "the late James Mullin" in the newspaper notice.
1856 - a butler on James and Sarah Jane's marriage certificate
1858 - a butler on John Michael's marriage certificate
1859 - a farmer? (hard to read) on William and Eliza's marriage certificate
1879 - a farmer on Charles' death certificate
1901 - a surveyor on Margaret's death certificate

I've checked the two saying he's a butler and am sure they don't say beetler. Would many homes in Newtown Limavady have a butler at that time?

The children went to Victoria, Australia at different times between 1840 and the mid 1850s.
