First of all, I have not been able to find any documentary evidence for the following - but it is another string…
It is possible that the John who married Elizabeth Kilby was baptised 20 Apr 1760 at St Leonard, Shoreditch s.o. Isaac (1730-1765) and Elizabeth (nee Veltom).
Isaac was born 1730 in St Paul’s Walden, Herts. Son of Robert & 2nd wife Tabitha (nee Clinton) he was apprenticed to Joseph Stainer citizen and weaver of London in 1745.
Isaac died in 1765; Tabitha Chipperfield (nee Clinton) in 1772 – her will of 1769 leaves £20 for John. This £20 to be held and expended to John’s best advantage by his uncle Clinton Chipperfield.
Clinton died in 1814 – his will of 1805 mentions John as a son of his late brother Isaac.
Both Clinton and Tabitha died at Hitchin, Herts.
13 Oct 1782
Ippollitts, Herts.
John Chipperfield sm of Hitchin
Elizabeth Kilby sw otp
wits: John Creasey, Thos. Deanner
So, was John sent to his grandmother in Herts, and later apprenticed there by his uncle?
Perhaps it you can get sight of John’s apprenticeship record it just might have his father’s name on.
I would be pleased to hear if you get anywhere with this – as I can tie the records up.
