I've been down home during the summer and asked if anyone knew anything about Edward Whelan - Garyhundon is only 2 miles or so from our family home -  they weren't too sure of the names but the story I got was this,
Edward Whelan worked for the Ryan's when Alice became a widow an arrangement was made that he would marry her look after the farm and when her son (Harry) came of age he would leave.

Not sure the truth of the story but Edward is not with Henry in 1911 and it seems they have parted company -  Edward a herd still in the Nurney area and henry living in Garyhundon with another Ryan as head of the household.

HI Ken

He died in Dublin 1907 in the workhouse/hospital of pneumonia, and his death cert gives his occupation as 'carman' The family business up to the end of the last century were car men/ carriers,

I think I have him on the 1901 census living with a sister but no occupation is listed there.

Thank You Jim and Ken for your answers.

I'll go back to the family member who has the original photo and see if I can get a better quality scan.

Have you any idea where the Conaught Rangers recruited from, Could he have signed up in Dublin? Or would have have had to travel to those counties you mentioned?

Thanks Sinann, I didn't know how to link to the other site, so I posted the picture there too,
I would also like to hear from any other descendants from the Carroll line as I know 2 ended up back in Dublin aftertwards.
There is also a story that one of them may have owned the Brazen Head pub in Dublin at one time (Oldest Pub in Dublin)

Hi

This is a photo of my Great great grandfather Hugh Carroll (Dublin Ireland)  born 1856 died 1907.
We have been told that it is a Conaught Ranger uniform, but I would be very grateful for any other information the photo gives.

can the medals be identified?
is there any significance to the design on his sleeves?

Also where would the Conaught Rangers have served between 1875 and 1900 where might he have been posted.

and where can I go to find his service record.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Dublin / Hugh Carroll Irishtown

This is a photo of my great great grandfather Hugh Michael Carroll, born 1856 of James Carroll and Brigid?

In 1876 he married Anne Molloy of 4 maginness place in St Andrews Church.

The photo shows 5 children but I have only found records for 4
James Carroll born 16th June 1877,
Maria Carroll born 28 th Nov 1878
Peter Carroll born 3rd Feb 1880
Christopher Carroll born 24th April 1881 (my great grand father)

The children were all baptised at St Mary's Church Haddington Rd, and the family lived on Irishtown rd, moving between no.s 1 and 2 sometimes referred to as 'Carroll Cottages' on the baptismal register. There were a family of Brown's living in those houses also, I suspect Mr's Brown was a sister to Hugh.

We have been told the uniform is Connaught Rangers, but if anyone can hop identify Hugh's position in the regiment form the design on the sleeves, or identify the campaigns from the medals I would be very grateful.

Thanks

That's definitely the same family Genseacher.
Have you any idea of the marriage date, it would help give a rough estimate of Edwards birth date.

Edward's brother John married a Dargan, there's a big family of them in Meath St with church records in St Catherine's and St Audeon's (most of the Dublin Church Records are available online on www.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords.

Hi Genseacher

The information I have is from the Leighlin parish records, I was tracing all Sheehan connections so I might have missed some Whelan births if the mother's maiden name was not clear. But the only Whelan's I found born of Frances Sheehan were John 1855 and Patrick 1859, if they moved to Dublin after that there may have been other births not on the Leighlin register.
Edward would be a family name, it seems Frances may have had a brother Edward too.

I'll search through the information I have gathered and upload anything I think might be relevant for your search.
