Dear Every one at Roots Chat
I have been asked by my cousin if i can find out  anything about   his mums family back ground as he does'nt know alot about them.  :( His parents died when he was quite young  :( and I said i would try to find out anything i could. So i am asking for your help.  :-* So with a  little searching i have found out his grandparents were Percy Chantry who  i think was born in Grantham in 1897. ;D   Also I think he married Sarah who came from Glasgow so will i have to go on the Scottish site to find out about her. :-\  Any help would be apprciated. ;D
                                  Regards
                                       naafi girl :) :) :)

I'm not sure if you'll get this but I am also looking into the Chantry family in Grantham so would like to join up any information either of us is lacking. I have a Sarah and Clara Chantry in my family tree and I'm thinking Sarah might have married a Rawlingson which would explain Clara giving her first born Rawlingson as a middle name. I did find a note that said Clara was illegitimate and named Chantry at birth

Sorry about the quality of the pic it is all I have to go on at the moment until I scan the original which will be a matter of months in time.
This photo has been passed down in my family and no one knows who is in it or anything about it, just what side it came from. We did believe it could be a Pte. John William Gadsby; b. 1884, Lincolnshire; d. Oct 9 1917 Belgium; 307666; West Yorks Reg.
but I have looked at the cap badge and they didn't match. Did they change? or is it possible he moved regiments?

Thank you to everyone for the help.

It appears William (b: Leicester) married Mary Ann Carroll in Nottingham (1849), she died in 1861 and he married a Mary Slater (hence the middle name coming in) in 1862! He had 4 children with each of his wives. I have unlocked the Bedells now to 1620, now for the other branches...

I have a copy of the 1861 census that he appears on. Living with Mary Ann, Robert, Elizabeth, and Maria. They are residing in Notts and it says William's birthplace is Nottingham. This is what has been the confusion with William as there seems to be a lot of them (very popular first name, not so much surname) and each time he is found there is a different birthplace!  ::) ???
I guess this is what makes genealogy fun  ;)

Have you checked this out, Your dates would not be approx then.
For Instance
Sept 1862
Grantham
Jesse Slator Bedells
7a/423

I have indeed, it is where a lot of the information I have got is from. I have Jesse's death down as 1865. Although the 'Slator' has been dropped on the record.

1871 has william with wife Mary and children Eliza, Elizabeth, Lucy and Henry all in Grantham.
I think we may possibly have 2 William B's here?

William and Mary Ann did settle in Grantham, my great-great-grandfather Harry was born there, or so I am lead to believe

I have his children listed as (dates are approx):
George (1850)
Maria (1851)
Robert (1855)
Elizabeth (1857)
Jesse Slator (1862)
Lucy Mary (1866)
Harry (1869)
George William (1872)

So Albert could be another one!

The 1881 census has him born in Bradford he is a 50 year old shoemaker and living with his wife Mary in Grantham.Young George is down as born in Grantham in 1872 he was 9 years old. They also have Lucy 15 and Henry 11.
Free Bmd Grantham births
Lucy Mary Bedells Sep 1865 7a/423
Henry Bedells Mar 1870 7a/467
George William Mar 1872 7a/467 (Yes they are the same ref numbers)

Thank you!, they had two sons named George, this is the younger. That is great. Bradford it is then! I was hoping for Leicester as I live here and could go to the records office easier :,)

thank you both so much! the freecen site has no 'Bedells' found in 1841, 51, or 81. I will try different spellings with my search.
The Nottingham one looks like the right one! Thank you Rosie!

I was looking at the Mary Ann Carrall one last night but I was unsure as I saw a Mary Ann Lowe too. You are a star! muchas gracias!
