The only way to truly go back in your family tree is through the maternal line. I think a lot of people have areas of ambiguous paternity. I have one generation where one census there is a lodger living with them and the next two the father is missing and the lodger is head of household. I had assumed the father had died and mother remarried, until I found the father living elsewhere on the later census (living with the family of his eldest daughter).

That would be very odd; if that is the case then it could also be from 23:59:59 on 6 July.

I would have thought that they actually want people to use it rather than trick them; I suspect that some people will have given up already and won't try again all weekend.

It is very annoying; maybe they do it to avoid having to work out all the various world time-zones, especially as they are based in the US who have many time zones... so they decided at an early stage to not say the start time, for fear of the backlash as people in different locations moaned :)

Possibly. Maybe they could accept that large numbers of the world's population aren't stupid and understand time zones and could therefore work out the start time in their county if they specified the time zone in the start time.
well they give a definite end time, so which timezone is that in? As its a UK site I assume its UK timezone, but if the idea is to get people to resubscribe, then maybe the email should have either given a start time or have been sent once the free period began. As stated, some will pop on, see its not free and simply left again.

I'm not sure how many forums the OP is active in as it seems a strange request to me. The post age information is clearly shown on RC so when you search and find a topic of interest it is clear to see how old the last post is and then use that as to whether to post.

Posting on an old thread may well not get a reply and not simply because the original poster isn't active, they could be active but have moved on and not check the old threads or be subscribed to them. An old thread can come alive if someone posts on it, but it easy to see the ages of older posts and realise a new reply is on an old conversation.

The subject of lapsed RC members is a different one. Should lapsed members have their memberships revoked? For instance if someone hasn't been back in 5 years are they likely to ever be and should they be removed?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I needed to contact my mother who has the photo.
The back is plain except for some pencil writing, though she says she is unable to make it out. Hopefully she will send me a picture of the back.

My mother has told me that as a child she was told by her maternal grandmother about a nun in the family, but it isn't one that I have as yet been able to find. An Irish Catholic with the surname McGarry.  I contacted the Catholic FHS and there does seem to be several likely candidates, but need more information first.

My mother has a photograph of the nun, passed down to my mothers Aunt, and after her death given to my mother when her uncle was sorting out his wife's belongings. So I am hoping  for your helping in trying to extract information from the photo that might help me narrow my search. Is it possible to tell what order she belonged to, or maybe an approximate date?

What do you mean? There are maps you can look at, or the census summary sheets gives the streets covered by that route.

I don't know the DNA answer but I can supply the genetic answer. Look at the hairline of your maternal grandfather. ie your mums dad. That is your hairline.

( may not be true in all cases but I sure have scared my son :D )
My mum told me this years ago, so I should retain a full head of hair and not take after my father. It remained true for the first 30 years of my life, but in the next 10 not only did I lose my full hairline I ended up balder than my father.  :'(
