Australia Resources & Offers / Re: Convict returning to England
« on: Thursday 05 May 22 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi John  in 1861 Elizabeth was working as a housekeeper in Brighton at a private boarding school for boys, so she had a paid job and a roof over her head. Previously she had petitioned the then Home Secretary from her brother's address before John had sailed asking for clemency address and later gave her address as her sister's in Liverpool when John was first transported .
I had missed the posts about John posted 2021 but will now check them out.

I am trying to find any info re my convict ancestor returning to England .
His name was John Moah and he served his sentence at Freemantle. He received  a free pardon in Feb 1861 and appeared on the 1871 census in England. Could someone point me to any records of his time in Australia from 1858 ( on the Nile )and finding how he would get back to England i.e. any letters from his wife etc. Would he have been able to save the cost of his ship's ticket, would his wife send him the money or would he sail back as crew. I am completely stuck.  Any info or ideas where I can look gratefully received. Thank you.

Hi Can anyone help. I am trying to find a copy of the book titled...The precarious voyage of Her Majesty's convict  Ship Nile to the Swan River colony late 1857...by Bill Edgar.  Can anyone help me source either a printed copy or a digitalised version to download.  I am in the UK.  I have an ancestor who was on this ship. Thanks.

Suzard...just as a matter of interest Martha was pregnant and living with Uncle Fred in 1911 as her husband Samuel had gone to Canada in 1910 . The baby was stillborn and she followed in 1912. The next 2 children were born in Canada and they all  returned in 1920. The rest of the children all born in Cumberland.
I have the Griffiths family back to 1779. Isn't it the usual thing that it's the people in the 20th century who are the hardest to find.
Once again many thanks.

Hi This is brilliant. The address for Harold at Hall Street is spot on, this was the address of the birth of Martha Jane, I have the birth reg. Thomas Kelly is not on the birth reg for Martha but is on the baptism so that would agree with your explanation about  Methodist baptism. Martha was born 14th Feb 1891 and I married her 7th son on Feb 15th as it was the nearest Saturday to her birthday. I will be now sending for the marriage cert. for Sarah and Thomas Routledge , it will be interesting to see who the witnesses are.
Thank you so much for the info you have found for me, I am really grateful.
Cheers.

Hi Suzard.   Are you sure of the relationship between Martha and this Sarah Jane ? That is brilliant if you know for sure. That is definitely the marriage as they were  my in laws. I find it strange none of the family know this.
