Down / Re: Alexander Denney, B 1822, Kilkeel, County Down

Thanks for the info.

I have changed the birth year to 1821 or 22, based upon his age at death (48) and year of death (Jan 1870).  (I visited his grave last year and have photographs if anyone is interested.  His Irish born wife Susan 'Cullen' - from County Clare - is buried in the same grave, although she lived many more years than he.)

His parent's names come from his death certificate which I have a copy of and will share with anyone who would like a copy.  That is all we have to go on as the marriage certificate was destroyed in a church fire.  Susan likely supplied the information for the death certificate and we understand from family stories that she was illiterate.  (I have no parental data on Susan as the surname she used is likely to be in error, although probably phonetically similar.  Her death certificate does not list any parents.   I have a separate post about her.)

Alexander arrived in Australia in 1841 on the ship 'Wallace', is listed as protestant and the given occupation was labourer.  The ship manifest states that he could read and write.

Alexander was a farmer in Victoria, Australia.

Other than the children they had and other events in Australia, that is all I know.  I will look into what you sent.  Thanks again.

Clare / Susan 'Cullen' B ~1831, Ennistymon, Clare

Researching Susan, my GGGM, who migrated to Australia Around 1850.  The name Cullen is considered unlikely and was sometimes written as Cullinen, Quinlan or Quinillan.  Susan was apparently illiterate and not tolerant of being asked about her name more than once.  Her strong accent probably didn't help with getting the spelling right.  Her marriage certificate was destroyed in a fire and her death certificate lists no parental data.

Birth place could be Ennis or Ennistymon.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated.  I have all of her Australian history and will gladly pass that on to family members.

Researching Alexander, my GGGF, who migrated to Australia. Believe his father was Edward Denney and mother was Jane Donaldson.  (Australian history reasonably well known and I am happy to pass on all that I have.)

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

Gavin

Researching Norah, my GGGM.  She migrated to Australia and I am happy with what happened after that.
From her marriage certificate, her father was Dennis (a weaver) and her Mother was Norah (Honora/Nora) as well.

Nothing found on her parents so far.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

If that is Clive the retired police officer, then it is definitely a Small world.  My father and Clive were police together (possibly the same academy intake 1965 or 66) and were Superintendents at the same time.  Clive was my brother's boss at one stage also.

William James and Norah lived in Victoria and their Grandson David (my GF) moved to New South Wales to farm sheep and wheat.

I will post up a request about my Clare relatives soon.  Fingers crossed I will get some useful answers there also.

Yes Tara, Small is my surname.  I can trace it back to William Small B 1816, Middlesex.  His son William James Small migrated to Australia and married Norah Duggan there.  Not much known about the elder William but the Australian history of William James is pretty robust.  Norah and William James are my paternal Great Great Grandparents AND my maternal Great Great Great Grandparents.  (Not many people living in Australia back in those days.)

There used to be an advertisement on Australian TV that said that the Small family was the largest family (of related people) in the state of New South Wales.  Unfortunately, I am not from that Small family but there are plenty of Smalls in Australia.  Where is your husband's family from?

Thanks Tara,

Yes, I did put it in the wrong place.  I have a number of relatives from Clare also and was investigating them when I wrote the initial piece.  Dennis was a 'weaver' as listed on the marriage certificate.

The ancestry link is not me but I have communicated with Belinda on other family members.

Thanks for those links.  They are great.

I think I will have to come to Ireland for a while and visit all the family towns.

Thanks again,

Gavin
