Armed Forces / Kings own Scottish boarders in India
« on: Tuesday 22 July 25 20:43 BST (UK)  »
My father Ralph H Pyle was in India up the khyber pass between 1945-1948. He was in the King's Own Scottish Borderers Animal transport devision.
He played hockey for the battalion against the Indians.
It's a long shot but does anyone have any pictures or information or is related to anyone who served in the same battalion.

Thanks again for your help!

I have clarified everything else I was looking for with your help and others on RootsChat but I am trying to back further using this request.

This could be the same Richard Pile/Pyle you have highlighted who was married in 1790 but I have no idea yet as I only know about his son Thomas being born in 1787 and the mother was Ann Stafford/Salford.

I hopefully await further responses unless I hit Lucky and resolve the issue myself!

Family History Beginners Board / Richard Pile/Pyle

I am looking for information on an ancestor of mine called Richard Pile/Pyle born in the 1700s probably in Northumberland.

Apart from finding out where and when he was born and died I am also trying to find out who his parents where and if he was married.

I am aware that he had an association with Ann Stafford/Salford 1786/1787 who had his son Thomas Pile/Pyle in 1787.

Richard Pile/Pyle was at least my great great great great grandfather.

Can anyone please help me with my quest?

Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I think I have everything I need now to resolve the issue of who Thomas Pyle, born 1831, father and grandparents were!

His father was Thomas Pile/Pyle born in July 1787 in Houghton le Spring. His grandmother was Ann Stafford/Salford born in 1755. His grand father was Richard Pile.

It looks like his grandfather and grandmother were not married so his father probably at first had his grandmother's surname Stafford/Salford but later decided to use his grandfather's surname Pile/Pyle.

His Grandmother eventually married Richard Reed Hodgson (Hobson shown on church register) in 1788.

Thanks for all the information which at last proves my information on this issue was wrong and my distant relative has the right information!

Rosie99. I don't have any idea who the father is but your kind information of finding a Richard Pile as a possible father seems to be correct.

It could be that Thomas (Pile) Pyle had the same surname as his mother Ann Stafford/ Salford but decided to take his father's surname instead! The rest of your information fits in with what I had.

Family History Beginners Board / Ann Stafford/Salford born 1755

Ann Stafford/Salford born 1755 in Dentonburn married 1788 to Richard Reed Hodgson. She died in 1820.

I am doing my family tree for the surname Pyle and I have told by a distant relative doing the same that she had a son called Thomas Pile/Pyle born in Houghton le Spring in July 1787 who died in 1848.

Can anyone with the knowledge and access to records give me help to confirm this and if correct who the father of Thomas was?

Many thanks for your help and time!

Hi Jonwrrn

Yes it looks like my distant relative has got the right Thomas Pyle and not me!

She believes his mother is Ann Stafford/Salford born in 1755 in Dentonburn who died in 1820 and married a Richard Reed Hodgson in December 1788 in Chester le Street. He may have been Thomas's father and they were the grandparents of Thomas Pyle murdered at Durham in 1881?

Not sure if you or anyone else can confirm this?

Hi Jonwrrn

I can see without doubt the difficulties people can experience when do their family trees!! It amazes me how some people can go back when Adam was born (Lol) without making any mistakes!

The Thomas Pyle born in 1831 was my great great grandfather who was murdered in Durham in April 1882.

I know, similar to the other relative, that his mother was Harriet (Kirtley) Pyle born in Oct 1794 in Scotland and died in 1872. She was married to a Thomas Pyle on 5th July 1829 at
Bishopwearmouth.

The problem is who was the Thomas Pyle that she married which will then also determine who his parents and the Thomas Pyle, murdered at Durham, grandparents were!

My other family member believes the Thomas who married Harriet Kirtley in 1829 was Thomas Pile/Pyle born in Houghton le Spring on 23 July 1787 at Bishopwearmouth. He died in 1848. His mother is said to be Ann Stafford/Salford born in 1755 in Northumberland who died in 1820 and married a Richard Reed Hodgson on 2nd December 1788.

Like my other relative I also have always believed that my great great grandfather Thomas Pyle born in 1832 and died in 1882 mother was Harriet (Kirtley) born in Scotland in 1794.

Everthing I found at the time and recently here with Neale1961 was that his father was Thomas Pyle born in 1783 in Woodhorn Northumberland who died in 1850. I believed that he was the Thomas Pyle who married Harriet Kirtley on 15th July 1829 in Bishopwearmouth!

I believe that that Thomas Pyles parents were Thomas and Isabel (Pearson) Pyle married on 16th May in 1764 in Newbiggin by the sea.

So thats where we have the confliction where we have no idea which of us is correct but we honestly believe one of us has the right information of who Harriet Kirtley in July 1829 and who were that Thomas's parents. This would have been the father and grandparents of Thomas Pyle, murdered in Durham 1882,

I am just lost now of what to do next!

Thank you!

Hi Jonwrrn

Many thanks for your thoughts on this issue!

As I was saying in my last reply to Neale1961 the information that he gave me convinced that my information is right and my other distant relative is wrong.

The other relative and I agree the mother of Thomas Pyle born 1831 was Harriet (Kirtley) Pyle.

However I believe, like Neale1961, that his father was Thomas Pyle christened in Jan 1783 in Woodhorn Northumberland. From that his grandparents were Thomas Pyle and Isabel (Pearson) Pyle married in 1764 Newbiggin by the Sea.

The other relative is convinced that his father was Thomas (Pile) Pyle born in 1787 in Houghton le Spring. From this they believe his grandmother was Ann Stafford/Salford born in 1755 and his grandfather was probably Richard Reed Hodgson born 1748.

So I was trying to confirm if anyone could confirm which of us is correct Jonwrrn.

Thanks!
