Scotland / Re: Currie birthplace in "Scotland"- where do I start?

Thanks, GeoffW, your information certainly adds to my picture of the Currie family in Elie in the 19c - and good luck with your Ovenstone research.

I've realised how much it helps if families stayed put in one area- I have no idea which part of Scotland this Currie branch moved to Elie from, c second half of 18c- early 19c. If I was able to access  parish records does anyone know if they would show places where people were born (eg on marriage and death records)?
thanks

Thanks, sbate, for your suggestion - I've certainly got an open mind as to where my particular Curries came from originally, as they seem to disappear from Elie in Fife as I go backwards in time.

I think the John Currie+Ann Forest suggestion of Jap was right, but they died in 1847 and 1848 (Elie gravestones), so no certificates. I think John's parents were David Currie and Anne Archibald, as Jap says, and have a marriage date of 16/3/1780 for them, but that's as far as I've got so far-

Jap, I'm again amazed and grateful for all this information-  it'll take me awhile to absorb it!

I had found out about Peter Currie in the 1861 and 1881 censuses (censi?)  on the English census returns for Birmingham( he's actually mis-spelt as Gurrie). After your first post I tried ordering a parish register extract on the Scotlands People website, but found it a bit difficult to navigate and understand the charging system.

It's spooky: the thing that started me off trying to find out Peter Currie's exact birthplace was that my first cousin asked me if I knew where our family came from (I didn't), as he'd noticed a lot of Curries in a graveyard when he was visiting people in Scotland. The graveyard was in Elie.

Thanks again

Thank you, Lindsay and Jap!

I'm amazed at your quick and helpful responses - I've been staring at his name for months. As you can tell I'm a bit new to this -e.g. I didn't know about the IGI, and am not sure if LDS Family Centres are physical places, or online

I do think you have found exactly the right Peter Currie, born in Elie, as he later called his first son Forest- I was wondering why, but now all is clear. He went on to become a brassfounder and lived in Birmingham.

Now to look up where Elie is on the map (and tackle John Currie and Anne Forrest!).

Scotland / Currie birthplace in "Scotland"- where do I start?

I know that my ancester Peter Currie was born in Scotland circa 1822, and that his father's name was John (occupation builder). I'd be very grateful for advice on what to do/ where to go to find out exactly where he was born.
