Dear Linda,

That would definitely be the family. Helen was 36 in 1851 and is listed as being born in Scotland. I have just been looking for the father, Thomas, of Richard and John. And, I believe that I have found him in the 1841 Census. Tower Hamlets, St Leonard Shoreditch, Great Cambridge Street,
Thomas Tucker 66 No
Elizabeth Tucker 40 Ireland
Maria Tucker 30 No
John Tucker 28 No

Thomas Tucker is buried in St Mary Haggerston MX on 23 December 1849 aged 74, address Great Cambridge Street. I am trying to find, at present, what happened to the above Elizabeth and Maria.

Regards,

Bill

Dear Linda,

It would appear that you have the Tuckers in OZ well covered. As mentioned I have been able to trace the 2 sisters back to England and their parents and other siblings. However, there is a problem in getting copies of any documents to you as I don't know how to reduce the file size of each document and each one is generally too big to attach here, there being restrictions on the size allowed. If you don't already have my e-mail address, get in touch with Leeroy and ask him for it. If you then get in touch with me by e-mail, I can attach any records to a return e-mail.

Briefly, Richard Tucker was a Customs & Excise Man. He married Maria Smith at St Pancras on 2 May 1825. Because of his occupation, he moved around a bit, so the children were born in various places.
Richard, the first born, was baptised at St Pancras 3 December 1826.
William followed and was baptised at Battersea 10 August 1828 (born 14 July).
Maria Ann was baptised in South Moreton, Berkshire 11 July 1830 (IGI)
Jane was baptised in South Moreton, Berkshire 6 March 1832 (IGI)
Elizabeth was baptised in South Moreton, Berkshire 19 September 1833 (IGI) and appears to have died in infancy.
George was born in Newbury, Berkshire in ca. 1835.
Elizabeth was born in Glasgow, Scotland in ca. 1837.

Richard's wife, Maria dies between 1837 and 1841 as she does not appear on the 1841 Census, only the above children (except for the first Elizabeth) and a Female Servant, Hellen Allen. I mention this latter person, as in 1843, Richard marries her and starts a second family. I found 2 children to this marriage - Henry and Helen both born in Northamptonshire. This shows up on the 1851 Census with Maria and Elizabeth still living at home. What happens to Richard and Helen and their 2 children after 1851, I have been unable to determine, but they are no longer to be found in any of the later Census. Richard, could have emigrated somewhere, like his 2 daughters, Jane & Elizabeth.

In the 1851 Census, Richard and his brother William are living with a George Green & his wife Sarah. On Christmas day of 1851 Richard marries a Sarah Green, a daughter of a George Green and I suspect the same George Green that Richard and his brother were staying with earlier that year.

William Tucker went on to marry Janet Sutherland in Lanack, Scotland 6 June 1852 (IGI)

George went on to marry Frances Lennox in E. London, in the September quarter of 1859

In the 1851 Census, Jane is shown as being the 'daughter' of a John Tucker and his wife Sarah. But this is an error, and it should have been 'niece'. For on the following page and as part of the same family, Jane's brother George is listed  and he is shown as being a nephew of John & Sarah. John Tucker & Sarah Hannah Ball were married in 1843 at Canonbury St Paul, Islington. John states his father as being Thomas Tucker, Clerk. When Richard married for the second time also in 1843, he also stated that his father was Thomas, but occupation Exciseman. No doubt the same father, and if Thomas was also an Exciseman, it probably explains why Richard was born in Ireland while John was born in Kent.

John Tucker was a Cabinet Maker as were Jane & Elizabeth's brothers.

I think That that is about the lot for now. Hope that you can follow it all OK,

Regards,

Bill

Dear Eddie,

I am new to RootsChat, so I don't know whether the attachments that I wish to send you will arrive OK or whether I will need to send you several replies. A few comments first. I just read over our correspondence from 2008, and I note that I had a few records wrong, but I believe that the information that I sent you in that chart earlier this week is correct. I note from our earlier correspondence also that you had John Parker, father of your Robert, who went to NZ, as having died in 1900. He did actually die on 4 June 1881 a few months after his wife, Lilly, who died on 25 February of the same year. If you have not already been there, you can confirm John's death on PRONI as he left a Will which you can download for free. Both Nathaniel and Robert are mentioned. The other item, which I hope you can answer, relates to John's father, Robert. You mentioned that he was born in 1797. Can you recall how you came by this date ?

I am attaching 6 pages of the Annual Report of the Connor Presbyterian Church for 1863. I found this interesting in that it indicated that most of the population of the area were Presbyterian and attended the Connor Church. I believe that the Kells Church may have been up and running by this date, but it was a very much smaller congregation.

The other attachments concern the auction of the Earl of Mountcashel's Estates in Connor in 1850. Much of the land in the Townlands of Connor were owned by the Earl. He appears to have got into difficulties and sell up all his estates. There are 2 pages. Let me know if there are any problems.

Regards,

Bill

P.S. I will need to send the remaining 4 attachments in a separate reply as I see that you are allowed only 4 per reply.

P.P.S. Just got a message that the file is too big, so I will have to spread these attachments over a few replies.

P.P.S. I have just checked the file size of each page and find that I am unable to attach them because they are too big. I don't know how to reduce the size. Hoping that you still have my old e-mail address, if you get in touch with me there, I will be able to attach the pages to an e-mail.

Dear Linda,

I tracked the Tuckers back to Lambeth and other places and found some births and marriages. I have passed copies of these on to Leeroy and can do the same for you if you wish. Let me know.

Regards,

Bill

Dear Eddie,

Thank you for your reply. Hoping that your e-mail address has not changed, I am replying here. It is easier. Some 6 years back, I approached the Minister of the Connor Presbyterian Church for permission to purchase a microfilm copy of the records for the said Church, then held by PRONI. Such permission was granted and a microfilm shortly thereafter arrived. It covered baptisms from about 1819 onwards. I have to say at this stage that it was the worst microfilm I have ever had to read. Every single page was out of focus , which as I am sure you can imagine, made matters very difficult indeed to decipher what was actually written on the page. The worst pages were the early ones as the minister had not wasted any space and each page was chock-a-block full with of course the added difficulty of deciphering the writing. I believe that eventually I was able to isolate all those entries containing the Parker surname. However, it was not possible to identify the day and month on many occasions due to the blurred nature of the entries. The good part about these Presbyterian registers is that the maiden name of the wife is always recorded along with the husband as well as the Townland. For the moment, I am unable to find my original transcriptions, but they are filed somewhere. All the birth years given in the chart that I sent you came from this register. Any marriage dates have either been taken from certificates bought or from copies taken from the microfilm record of the marriages in that area. The few positive deaths have come from certificates bought.

It is a real pity that there is not an earlier register as I am sure that it would have been a real boon to all of us with Parkers in this Kells/Connor area. Maybe something else will turn up one of these days. Hope that this answers your questions.

Regards,

Bill

P.S. As you have received this through Rootschat it means that the e-mail address that I have of yours is no longer current. Mine hasn't changed since we originally corresponded.

Eddie,

We did correspond a few years back with regard to the Parkers of Kells/Connor. I have a feeling that I may have given you one piece of incorrect information. I will need to did out our old e-mails. Suffice to say, I have done a bit of work on these Parkers since then and, from all the available information, I have been able to put together the attached tree for your branch.

Bill

P.S. I hope the attachment arrives. If not let me know, and I will try some other method. Just got a message that I can't attach a word document. I will see if I can change it into .jpg format

Australia / Re: Elizabeth TUCKER - Alfred SMITH b1834
« on: Monday 24 March 14 02:09 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first entrance to RootsChat, so apologies for any mistakes. Alfred Smith was a great grandfather on my mother's side. My grandfather, Percy Joseph Smith, was a full brother of Leeroy's gggrandfather, Albert Francis Smith. There have been a lot of very worthwhile comments made in this chat and I have found it most interesting. Rather than try and answer each individual question, I think it is probably better that I approach my input from the start. But, before that, I must state that for some unknown reason, Percy Joseph's birth was never registered, whereas all the other children of Alfred's 3 wives were.
Alfred was the only son of James Smith and Sarah Ovell, and was baptised in Clavering, Essex on the 15 December 1833. He arrived in NSW aboard the 'Plantaganet' in 1854. He met Elizabeth Tucker on that voyage, and they married 3 years later in 1857. There were 5 children - Alfred (1858), John (1860), George (1863), Elizabeth (1865) & James (1871). John  & James did not survive infancy. James's death does not show up on his mother, Elizabeth's, death certificate as he did not die until 3 months after her. There is no blood connection between Alfred Smith and either Emelia or Edward Smith. This latter mentioned couple were at 14 Hutchinson St. in 1869. Alfred is not at the same address until 1872. In 1869, Alfred is either in Botany St. Redfern or in Langley Lane, off Burton St.
Alfred married his second wife, the widow Sarah Ann Paley in 1872 and 3 children resulted - Henrietta (1872), Albert (1873) & Sydney (1876). Only Sydney survived. Sarah's death certificate shows 2 females deceased, but this is an error and should have read 1 male and 1 female deceased.
Alfred married Charlotte Bowers in 1881 and 4 children resulted - Arthur Maynard (1882), Clara (1883), Percy Joseph (1886) & Albert Francis (1889). Arthur did not survive infancy.
Alfred Smith died 7 February 1906 and is buried in Rookwood while Charlotte died 18 January 1914 and is buried in Waverley Cemetery. Unfortunately, no Wills were left by either person.
Of the surviving children of Alfred's 3 marriages, the following is known,
Alfred (1858) married Eleanor Francis Flower in Fitzroy, Vic. in 1886.
George (1863) married Clarice May Sherwood in Paddington NSW in 1902. He died in 1936 in Mascot.
Elizabeth (1865) married John Sinclair in Sydney in 1885. She died in in 1931 in Narrabeen.
Sydney (1876) married Jane Ann Shaw in Newcastle, NSW in 1904. He died in 1935 in Lidcombe.
Clara (1883) married Joseph Alfred Alexandria Tall in Leichhardt in 1903. She died in Westmead in 1976.
Percy Joseph (1886) married Frances McCulloch in Sydney in 1912. He died in Canley Vale, NSW in 1973.
Albert Francis (1889) married Helen Errington Mattsson in Leichhardt in 1909. He died in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1950.
Alfred's second wife, Sarah Ann, was born a Coker and married Alfred Paley in Newcastle, NSW, in 1863. She bore him 5 male children - Thomas (1863), Alfred Thomas (1865), William (1867), George (1869) & John born in 1870, 6 weeks after his father died. Thomas & William did not survive infancy. Sarah Ann Coker sometimes considered herself (on official documents) as Sarah Ann Green. But she was never a Green. Green was the name of the man that her widowed mother married in 1860.
Charlotte Bowers had 4 children before she married Alfred Smith. They were, Edward Laurence Bowers (1869), Alice Mary Bowers (1873), Margaret Theresa Bowers (1876) & George Bowers (1878). The 2 boys did not survive and Edward was buried as Edward Robert Byrne in Rookwood in 1878, while George was buried as Frank George Byrnes in Rookwood in 1881.
When Alice Mary married James Squires in 1894, she did so as Alice Mary Byrne. While when Margaret Theresa married Alfred Howard Denniss in 1906, she had changed her name to Emily Louisa Byrne
The father of these 4 children was one Edward (Laurence/Lawrence) Byrne and according to Emily Louisa's marriage certificate he was deceased by 1906. As Charlotte never married this man, it is never going to be possible to positively identify him. My own conclusions are that he was probably already married, Irish & a catholic and a carpenter.
I hope that this helps anyone connected with any of these ancestors.
