Kent / Re: Deptford St Nicholas and St Paul
« on: Tuesday 13 May 25 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi Andy,

Many thanks for the pointing me towards the FreeReg site as it has been a while since I last used it.

The FreeReg website have transcribed 104,919 entries from the parish registers for St Nicholas between 1563 and 1939. St Nicholas Deptford

I have done a quick search and it has come up with a number of entries that are relevant to this couple.

Many thanks,

Simon

Hi Ian,

Many thanks for the details regarding the Ancestry records and the search parameters.

The St Nicholas Deptford PRs are in the London collection on Ancestry, with images.

You need to look under
London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1940
Borough of Greenwich > St Nicholas, Deptford: Deptford Green > 1784-1812.

The saint part is spelt Saint in one lot and St in another. You want the ones with St.

Ian C

I will look into those next time I am at the library.

Cheers,
Simon

Kent / Deptford St Nicholas and St Paul [Completed]
« on: Tuesday 13 May 25 04:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This has no doubt been asked before, but.....

Is there a way to view the parish registers for the above churches? There is a record of a marriage between Andrew Bone and Alice Walton on the 4th July 1796 at St Nicholas. The next entries are for births and deaths from 1802.

I have checked the Kent FHS site and their CD appears to have only 9 marriages for both St Nicholas and St Paul. This seems to suggest that the registers are likely to have been damaged and only a few entries are sufficiently legible to be transcribed.

Would this be a correct assumption?

My apologies to Elwyn, the group and PRONI as it has taken me longer to post this than it took for them to respond.

As previously mentioned I used the e-catalogue references kindly provided by Elwyn to find the resources which contained personal records for patients.

I then used the online query form at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/proni-enquiry-service and submitted a request for records relating to my gg grandmother. In this I included the links to the civil marriage and death records available at https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ and the relevant reference numbers and received an initial response a week after submitting.

Twenty days later I received the information that they had managed to find relating to my query.

Sadly in my case they were only able to find the entry relating to her death, but this did contain the date that she was admitted to the Asylum indicating that she had been released from Peebles Asylum on the 3rd June and admitted to the Londonderry Asylum the next day.

Definitely worthwhile trying due to the very prompt response from the Team at PRONI.

Hi Elwyn,

Let me know the final outcome. It'd be helpful in case others ask about these files in future.

I will definitely let you know how I get on with this request. It may be a little while though, as the site did advise that they endeavour to respond within 20 days.

Hi Elwyn,
Very many thanks for the additional information and reference numbers. I had searched the ecatologue and failed to find any reference to the records you have very kindly posted.

Me and search engines don't see eye to eye.

I had a look at the PRONI e-catalogue and amongst their records for Londonderry Asylum....

You can make an FOI request to them by e-mail and there’s no fee.

I have already used the online Enquiry option from the link you supplied in your original post so I will see what response I get from that query. If the initial response isn't helpful I'll send another with the new HOS references you have supplied. While I doubt there would be a photo of Margaret, just the thought that there could has brought a massive smile to my face.

I can't thank you enough for all of this information!

Simon

Hi Elwyn,
Many thanks for the GRONI link.

PRONI has minute books and annual reports for “Londonderry Lunatic Asylum” later known as “Londonderry City and County Mental Hospital” in the series of records prefixed HOS/17/7. I suggest you e-mail PRONI to ask if they hold any admission registers for that hospital.

Based on the 2012 post Aghadowey linked to it seems likely that the records no longer exist, but I will get in touch with them to confirm.

It would be great if they do have the records as I really like to know who the family member is as all of Margaret's known children had emigrated to the US apart from Thomas who was living in Scotland. There is a possible Jennie Canning who is likely a grand-daughter, but she would have only been about 16 or 17 in 1907.

Cheers,
Simon

Hi Gaffy,
Many thanks for the information regarding Margaret as it seems very likely that M Guinness would be Margaret.

Just as an aside, the 1911 Ireland census shows a 33 year old Margaret McGuinness as a nurse in the Lunatic asylum (under house 20.1 in Strand Road, Derry).

Based on the above post, it seems unlikely that the records exist any longer.
