Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Horne Brothers (Grocer's) of Shipley

Unfortunately I don't as I'm much too young, and my parents didn't move to Shipley until the 70s.  I did grow up there though and am interested about how it used to be.

I also had a look at old maps and noticed the Fox & Hounds at 1 Commercial St, so presumably Horne's was right next door, one door from the corner, and the pub is the reason why Fox's Corner (the road junction) is now so named?

There is the Talbot Inn on Woolshops on an 1852 map which is labelled Talbot Hotel on the 1890 map.

The other Inns of that name in the area (that I know of) are in Illingworth and Elland, which are about 3 and 3.5 miles from the town centre respectively.  Considering Lord Rockingham is supposed to have stayed at what is now Somerset House in the town centre, a couple of minutes walk from Woolshops, it seems likely that you've got the right one.

Bear in mind I'm not an authority on the topic at all.

There is a chance that the local authority could have taken photographs of the area as part of the preparations for building Aachen Way that now runs over the site.  I suppose it's unlikely anything like that survives, but it might be worth asking.

There's one in Sheffield in 1941, died aged 78, any good?

Clay pits - are you sure it isn't coal pits, of which there are quite a few nearby? Clay mining isn't something the West Riding is particularly known for. On the other hand the map shows dozens of sandstone quarries in the area - maybe someone who knows a bit about geology might be able to say whether this makes clay pits more or less likely.
Fire clay is often found under coal seams, so that could be an explanation perhaps.

Haven't the foggiest, but it looks an awful lot like the building for sale here:

If your Polish is any good it might be worth asking them.

Technical Help / Re: Email warning BT
« on: Friday 14 March 14 16:29 GMT (UK)  »
I just thought I would mention that although the advice given in the first post would ordinarily be sound, and one should always be very wary of pretty much anything received by e-mail even if it looks legitimate, this is one instance where deleting the email straight away might not be the best idea.

Apparently the email omega 1 received is a copy of a genuine email from BT (one that I received myself), but with some of the links changed.  People with a BT email address who are no longer customers of BT for their internet services will lose access to their email in April.  Apparently scammers have seen this as an opportunity to take advantage of some less careful folk.

In short, if you do not use BT as your internet provider but still have an email address like this:
@btinternet.com
@btopenworld.com
@talk21.com

then it's probably worth checking whether you need to do anything if you wish to keep it.  There's some info at  www.bt.com/emailchanges
