Hello, I am keen to get information on the E and W Sussex 1785 Land Tax, as follows, if at all possible for the BAX surname in these areas:

- in Itchingfield and Southwater near Horsham (now W Sussex)
- in Newick and Chailey ( E Sussex)
- in Slaugham, Cuckfield and Wivelsfield (now W Sussex?)
- in Ardingly (W Sussex)

Also, do the records tell you where exactly people lived, like Tithe records? Can they be mapped?

Many thanks

Hi

I have a marriage from the Sussex Marriage index as follows:

Mary Bax to James DUNTON  on Dec. 02, 1826 at Southwick, West Sussex

but I am keen to know the witnesses and anything elase about it.

Does anyone possibly have access to the Parish records for Southwick?

Southwick is a westerly part of Brighton, I believe.

Thanks,

Stephen Bax

Carol

Thank you so much for all of this. I will go through it all with great interest - almost everything you say ties up with what I have already but it also offers great new leads and ideas - most grateful.

(BTW Martha and her husband Alexander McIsaac moved to Gravesend in Kent, and she appears as a ginger beer dealer, widowed, in the 1851 census)

Yes, we are now sure that John and Susan/Susannah lived at the building which is now called the Bax Castle pub. He was a weaver.

Interesting that your cousin is one of the owners! I visited the pub in January and it is a great cosy place, highly recommended...

I promised to write down all I know about John and I still intend to do so, but we keep finding new stuff!

many thanks again

Stephen

Hi Daphne

Great to be in touch. I saw your other postings a few months ago and tried to email you but with no luck, so it is great we are in contact!

I too have a lot on John Bax. I will send you a personal message through the system so we can exchange information.

Thanks and best wishes

Hi again and thanks to everyone for your amazing detective work.

Yes, Ian and Ben are right - our William was married to Sophia (in Newick) and then to Ruth (in Slaugham), as you say. Our problem is that he says in the 1851 census that he was born in the Slaugham district.

We have located a William Bax born in 1795 (the one Sean spotted) and the date is right, but the location is not in Slaugham, but in Itchingfield and Horsham (recorded in the Horsham General Baptists), to parents William and Martha  who were married themselves in Itchingfield...... so we fear this William may not be the right one.

We have long felt that he might be linked back to the Capel Bax Quaker family, as Roy suggests - and thanks a lot Roy for the other really great tips on Quaker research - but we just can't make the link.

That is why we are trying now to see if there might not be another William Bax (or Box or Bex??) hidden in the Cuckfield or Slaugham records...  Especially as his second marriage was in Slaugham and (as Ian noted) there is that tempting Bax marriage between a Richard and Mary in Cuckfield at the right date...

Thanks a lot for your ideas and help so far... any inspiration very gratefully received. My poor dad has been trying to make the link for twenty years, and his dad before him, so we have been stymied for a LONG time.... :-\

A census record for William BAX says he was born in 'Slaugham district' in 1794 or 1795.

Does anyone have access to Slaugham parish records, or nearby Cuckfield? Can anyone find his birth recorded in that area?

Many thanks and happy new year!
