Hello

The RAF was formed on 1st April 1918 - that's why he transferred on that day.

Manktelow - a very unusual name - I have Manktelow cousins.

Technical Help / Re: Anybody have full fibre fitted?

On mine the underground fibre cable is green. That terminates in the junction box and a black fibre cable goes through the house wall to the ONT inside the house. The ONT converts the Fibre optical signal to an electrical signal.

Exactly as Gadget described.

World War One / Re: William James Harris - Royal Navy/Royal Air Force?

That entry in the 1921 census shows him as married with a child. His wife and child are also at the same place but in different pages of the record. I found the marriage in Dundee - definitely my man.

It's opened up new lines of research. So thanks again.

All the best

World War One / William James Harris - Royal Navy/Royal Air Force?
« on: Tuesday 13 May 25 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Bit of a mystery. I have the Royal Navy service record for William James Harris. The last entry is for 31 Mar 1918 discharged to RAF. And at the bottom in remarks it refers to N38135/18 approved discharge in order that he may be appointed to the RAF. But then I would expect to find an RAF record from 1 Apr 1918 for him. But I can't find one. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and I believe he would have become a Flight Sergeant in the RAF? And does the comment mean that he wasn't in the Royal Naval Air Service and hence didn't automatically transfer to the RAF?

Might he have left the service completely and not transferred? He was aged 32 in 1918.

Clips of his RN record below.

Any thoughts?

In the blurb from Software Mackiev about FTM2024 I didn't see anything in the new features that interested me so I didn't bother signing up for it. But one thing they did say that caught my attention was that there were lots more new features 'under the hood'. One thing that has irritated me for a long time is that the roll back feature doesn't allow you to specify how far you can roll back. It's fixed at 1000 changes which is far too big to be useful.

Have they implemented a more flexible roll back yet?

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Parish in Hampshire

Just to add - I come from Hampshire and the pronunciation of East Meon never included the 'T'. It sounds something like eessmeehan which corresponds with the earlier suggestions that the vicar wrote what he heard.
