Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Restoration for my Grandad please
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi, this is a special family photograph but as you can see it is slightly damaged. If anyone could help to restore it I would be very grateful. The photo itself is only small so I'm afraid that the resolution isn't brilliant but I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks, Sam

Dublin / Foxrock
« on: Friday 30 May 14 19:59 BST (UK)  »
It's a bit of a long shot but I'm trying to find relatives and friends of relatives that might still live in Foxrock (Cornelscourt) and was wondering if anybody knew of somewhere you could go or speak to who might know a bit more local history and be able to point me in the right direction. Also, is there a local newspaper in Foxrock? Like I said, it's a long shot but you never know who you might find! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Common Room / Specified illness on census as "Evil"?
« on: Thursday 17 April 14 19:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure where to put this, but I have found something very unusual on a census return...

On the Ireland 1901 Census, a member of the family has been classed as 'Evil' in the Specified Illness column. Can anyone help with the meaning of this?

It does say beneath to 'See Form C' which I presume would have been attached to the original census, but this form isn't available to me.

Any ideas anyone?!

Dublin / Re: Trip to Dublin - Where Do I Start?

Thanks for all of your replies everyone.
And rest assured that the first thing we will be doing when we get there is going straight to the pub!

Family wise I believe that I have got everything I could possibly find online.
I've got the census's, birth and marriage records and the 1939 electoral. I'm having a good dig to see if there is anything that I could possibly have missed online, so if you have any hints it would be appreciated.

I think that I want to focus on finding out what happened to the family after the census's, so I would be looking at the electoral and parish records to see if I can find out any more information.

The family were based in Dun Laoghaire and then, I believe, moved to Wicklow before settling in Foxrock.

Dublin / Trip to Dublin - Where Do I Start?
« on: Saturday 22 March 14 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
So I'm heading over to Dublin for a few days and plan on doing a bit more family research while I am over there. Where do I start?
I've got my basics I just want to see if I can go a bit further, so I will be need Catholic parish records, electoral and anything else that you might suggest. Has anybody used the resources in Dublin and what do you recommend?

Dublin / Re: Mental Asylum

The article that you posted Sinann was really helpful. It gave me a much better sense of the St Brendan's hospital. I do not know the full circumstances of why my Great-Grandfather went there, but I have found where the records for the hospital are held so hopefully I will find some more information from there.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Knutsford Prison... Request
« on: Friday 14 March 14 18:40 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the advice Pat it was really helpful, I have emailed them both and hopefully something will come back.
Thank you for looking at the records Garstonite. Yes it was definitely a prison, although I do know there was a workhouse there as well. I think that when she was arrested she had her children taken away from her, so hopefully the records might mention this. Also, I believe that they got married in 1876 because that is the year that their first child Rhoda was born. But once again there is no record for the marriage and no record for the birth of the child (that I can find) so it is all just guess work.

They were a travelling family so there are few records available.
I wasn't able to find a marriage record for them.
In fact, I have only been able to find them on census's and I was able to find the records for two of their children, Isaac Jr and Bill.

The place of birth for Gravelina, and all the family, vary from each record between Altringham, Macclesfield and Cheshire so I can't be sure at the moment.

Her parents were George Boswell and Louisa Sherriff.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Knutsford Prison... Request
« on: Thursday 13 March 14 19:01 GMT (UK)  »

Would anybody be able to look up Knutsford Prison records for me?

I am looking for Gravelina Bates (nee Boswell)
She is listed in the 1901 Census as being in the prison.

I would love to know the reason she was there and the period of time.

She did have a child in 1899 so we would be looking at her being admitted in to the prison from 1899-1901.

Any help would be appreciated!!
