London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Any Notmans out there?
« on: Sunday 01 August 04 21:28 BST (UK)  »
Have just found 'cousin" George Notman as witness to my grandfather's joining the Grenadier Guards in 1891.
Apparently George lived at 34 Hampden Rd, Brixton, London.  Anyone run across this fellow in their "trees"?

Brice,
My great-great grandfather was also a William Etherington. He was born abt. 1791 in Farnhurst, West Sussex. One of his children Samuel John Etherington was my grandfather (married to Martha Stevens). There were many Etheringtons born in Farnhurst (notice the different spelling). Also North Ambershaw/Ambersham, Lodsworth, and Hazelmere. But the most prevalent place seems to be LURGASHALL, Sussex.
Many Etheringtons were born there and some still live there today.  Someone who may be able to help you is   ***email address removed to stop spamming .  He has a lot of Etherington information AND may be able to help you find your William.

***You could send the email address via PM. - Moderator

Family History Beginners Board / Re: War Service Records

I have recently been in contact with the national Archives re: War Service Records. This was their response.
Thank you for contacting The National Archives (TNA).

SOLDIERS DOCUMENTS BEFORE 1914

The basic framework of a soldier's career throughout most of the nineteenth century, can normally be traced through the surviving Muster Books and Pay lists of his regiment(s), which are kept here. Using these to find a man's whole career can take a long time.  For many, but not all soldiers, it is quicker and easier to start with the Soldier's (enlistment and/or discharge) Documents in the collection known as WO 97.  This does not include all soldiers.  Before 1883, it normally covers those soldiers who were discharged and received a pension.  From 1883 to 1913, most soldiers are included, if they survived their service.  It can be difficult to find records of soldiers who died in service, especially as the muster books stop altogether by 1898.

Please click on the links below to detailed information leaflets on Soldiers' Discharge Papers 1760-1913, Muster Rolls and Pay Lists c1730-1898, and Soldiers' Pension Records 1702-1913:

Much appreciated, Kazza.
The young boy's name was Henry John Knapman Eveleigh - if this would be of any help.

Completed Census Requests / 1861 Census Wellington, Somerset (Eveleigh)
« on: Sunday 25 April 04 20:58 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can check the 1861 Wellington, Somerset census for John Eveleigh, spouse Ellen Sophia. They both were born in Devon - between 1828 - 1838. they had a son born in Wellington, Somerset in 1862 - so I am hoping they show up on the census the year before.
