Thanks for the replies

Special Thanks to stanmapstone

As well as pictures, one of your links states  'Hospital' is an old word for almshouses so now I can now assume that my relative was probably living in these 'Almshouses' at the time of his death.

Searching through the Bedale burial parish registers I found several references to "a Brother of Firby Hospital". This comment follows the name of the deceased person.

Does anyone know if this is a religious order, some sort of medical person/profession or an inmate of an institution?

Thanks for that Michael.

I'm working on the assumption that Maria was christened 12 Mar 1815 at All Saints, Newcastle and her parents were Samuel and Mary. Elizabeth was probably her sister and was christened 23 Nov 1814 also at All Saints. This ties in nicely with your findings from the BT's.

I believe that the marriage of Samuel Simpson and Mary Mallum (15 Nov 1812 All Saints, Newcastle) will turn out to be the parents of these sisters.

Thanks for the replies.

I did suspect the father to be called Joseph because I had already found a marriage on the IGI of a Joseph Simpson and a Maria Simpson dated 23 Feb 1935 at St Andrews, Newcastle.

The important bit I missed off my first post was that I'd like to establish the age of the father so that I can try to find his family. I felt the only way to find this with the help of the census.

With them both having the same surname it may turn out that they were cousins.

Maria kept using 'Maria' through the census returns. She remarried and was Maria Dawson in the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891.

Fingers crossed someone will find them.

David

Can anyone spot Maria Simpson in the 1841 census?

In the 1851 she was a widow in North Shields aged 36. Her children were William(16) Samuel(11) and 3 others (that were too young to show up in 1841). Her place of birth was given as Northumberland Ousburn, the children were all born North Shields.

I'm trying to find the name of her husband.

Cheers,
David

Thanks very much for your assistance Shep.

I will now focus more attention on Williams wife Sarah. Thanks to you I now know she had a previous marriage.

Cheers.

Hi again Shep,

I have his first wife as Margaret - she died in May 1823 age 34 (St John, Chester). His second wife was Catherine who died Oct 1831 age 30 (St Mary, Chester). All a bit scattered around Chester I know, but the family seemed to live in the Handbridge area.

As usual with this hobby I could be miles out with my findings,

Thanks for the prompt reply Shep.

The William I'm tracking was a Tobacconist and was made a Freeman of Chester in 1818. I believe he was married twice before the marriage in question - it appears that the previous wives both died young due to childberth complications.

My memory tells me I've come across another William that was a shoemaker but I've not kept any records.

Many thanks again for offering your time - your help is very much appreciated.

Hi,

Has anyone access to the parish records for Holy Trinity in Chester?

I know from the IGI that William Allman married a Sarah Meredith (30 Jun 1833) - I'm hoping that the original records will show his occupation or his age or something else that confirms the other few snippets I've collected on him.

Many thanks
