Edwardoscar, interesting, particularly regarding That Jean's parents: -  I have Alexander's wife Jean (Jane ' Jean' Irvine died 18 April 1863) as follows: - Father James Irvine b.  12 Feb 1764 Edinburgh, Mother Charlote Lambert b. abt. 1767.  see attached chart for more details

Would appreciate any help/views on the attached 1871 Dalkeith Census record.  Record number 11 (Peter Cairney) where born is unrecognisable (looks like Africa) but it wasn't.    Similarly record number 3 is also indistinguishable to me (looks like Audia) but I doubt it....

sonofthom, his parents are showing as being from Cavan, Ireland.  His sister who is 3 or 4 years older is also showing as Cavan Ireland.  I haven't been able to locate any Irish records which confirm any of this.  Records of 1800 - 1830's seem to be few & far between and the spelling of the surname seems to change somewhat as well...... :)

Peter Cairney (General Labourer) - place of birth:
1841 census has Ireland,
1851 census has Glasgow Lanarkshire,
1861 census has Glasgow Lanarkshire,
1881 census has Glasgow Lanarkshire.

1871 - Africa seem improbable.
