Hello out there
Thank you all for looking at my posts.
Thank you for filling in the blank as to WHY Susanna Coleman ( my great great grandmother) came to Canada.
Looks like her sister (thanks to your information) Jane Martha Fleetwood arrived here in 1885, leaving 2 of her children in England with Susanna. I have the passenger list from The Mongolian but did't connect the 2 children listed below the Coleman family with Susanna until your information. Susanna and all the children arrived in Halifax in 1891 and continued on to Lethbridge but I could never find out why. Jane and her husband must have travelled to Canada and then sent for the rest of the family.
I was also able to find tombstones for both Jane Martha and John Fleetwood and Susanna and her second husband Robert Burgess, all in Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Somewhere along the line, Susanna's son (my great grandfather) Arthur Coleman returned to Stellarton, Nova Scotia around 1900 and that's where we consider our "down home" to be to this day.
I'm still stuck trying to find out what happened to Susanna's first husband Edmund Coleman b 1850 Corton, Gorleston, Suffolk.
Anyone have any clues?
Thanks again

Thank you for all of this wonderful information!!
Yes, John and Margaret (Paterson) Roy are definitely the people I'm researching. Until you wonderful people came up with 1873, I don't think anywhere I've researched so far has shown the death date of John Sr.
I do have though a mention that Margaret Paterson Roy was killed in a carriage accident with a horse.
The reason I said Tolcross was John (Jock) Roy was born there Dec 10, 1803. But now you've mentioned Douglas, Scotland I have some where else to follow.
I have a picture of John Jock Roy's headstone at St. Philips Cemetery in Westville, Nova Scotia, but nothing for Margaret or John Sr.

This site says: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/9HCH-YBX
 John (Jock) Roy

death:    19 December 1889

The Henderson Family is in fact a branch of this great tree. But they haven't any further information that John and Margaret listed.

John Roy 15 coal miner, That's our Jock! As far as I can tell from the repetition of names JOHN seems to be the favorite.

If I'm understanding all this correctly it looks like John Roy 1803-1875, son John Jock Roy 1823 - 1895, son David Roy 1867 - 1955, son Clem Roy 1904 - 1972, son Gordon Roy 1931 - Nov 19, 2014, and then Jan Roy (that's me and the birth date is a national secret!)

I've had remarkable results with:
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com for BMD, but I cannot locate a John Roy who died between 1871 and 1881

Our Jock or John (the son of John and Margaret) was in fact married by 1868. He was actually married three times by then. Catherine Turnbull, Fanny Brown and my 3rd great grandmother Joanna McNeill. There were 19 children among the three families. We refer to each other as being from The First, The Second or as I am, The Third Family.
John (Jock) Roy
birth:    10 December 1823
Tolcross, Lanarkshire, Scotland
death:    21 October 1895
Westville, Nova Scotia

spouse:
Johanna MacNeill
birth:    1837
marriage:    1868
death:    1904

Fanny Brown
birth:    February 1823
marriage:    1843
death:    29 August 1855

Catherine Anne Turnbull
birth:    5 April 1825
marriage:    25 September 1855
death:    8 January 1868

We haven't been able to verify this but family history says that James Roy (brother of Jock) came to Canada around 1840, sent for his brother Jock who arrived on a ship Tomkitaboo. No where is there any mention of this ship that we've been able to trace.

I've managed to research other branches of my own family: Porter/Marshall (Galloway Scotland 1742) and Sinclair/MacDonald/Van Buskirk (the only non Scottish name in the group!!) but I am at a loss with the Roys.

Thank you again, so all your information. Things like Douglas, Scotland, the repetition of names, maiden names being used and John Sr's death are so much appreciated. I can't believe how long it's been since I've been on the Roy section of this site.

Thank you so much for all your hard work on my Coleman family search!
You've given me a great deal of information to work with.
Has anyone found a death date for Edmund Coleman b 1850 Gorton, Suffolk, England?
I know that Susannah Caghill Coleman left England in 1891, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Feb 24 1891. But there doesn't seem to be any trace of Edmund. He did not make the trip to Canada.
Thanks again, you've all been wonderful with your responses.

My great great grandfather was Edmund Coleman b 1849 Corton, Gorleston, Suffolk, married Susanna Cagill (b 1848 Beccles, Suffolk, Eng - d 1929 Lethbridge Alberta Canada). Their children: Arthur b. 1873, Elizabeth b 1880 and Jane E. b? all born in the Great Yarmouth area.
Susanna was my great great grandmother, she arrived at Halifax Nova Scotia Canada Feb 24 1891 with Arthur and Elizabeth. Jane and Edmund did not emigrate. She remained in Lethbridge, Alberta. Elizabeth's whereabouts are unknown. Arthur returned to New Waterford, Nova Scotia and died in Stellarton Nova Scotia. He is my great grandfather.
I am unable to find dates of death for Jane E and Edmund.
I believe Edmund's father was John Coleman and his mother was Mary Ann ? b 1826.
Can anyone help fill in the blanks?
Thanks

I too am looking for the Roy family of Lanarkshire Scotland.
My 3rd great grandfather was John Roy b 1803 Bailleston, Lanarkshire - d??,
married to Margaret Patterson 1805-1889  She died in Westville, NS,
Their son John (Jock) Roy 1823 Tollcross, Lanarkshire, emigrated to Nova Scotia, died Oct 21 1895. He was my 2nd great grandfather.
I have lots of information on Jock's children but no further parentage beyond the names of John and Margaret.
I believe than John's father was also named John Roy and may have been born about 1780?
Any information would be greatly appreciated

I was thrilled to see your recent message. I too am a Marshall descendant.
My 5th great grandfather was Robert Marshall.
My branch of the Marshalls is one of the ones you mention, who married into the Crockett family. Agnes Nancy Crockett was John Crockett's daughter. She married the John Marshall son of Robert and Elizabeth.
They had a family but John Marshall died April 7 1840 and she went on to marry William Porter and had an additional family.
Agnes Nancy Crockett was my 4th great grandmother on both sides as Pearl Marshall and Clifford Porter were my maternal grandparents.
Love your user name. I too am a Bluenoser, originally from Halifax.
Please keep in touch, if I find any more information in my searching, I'll let you know.
