Just found some more information in my file
The book is
Meditations on the word of God by Sturm 1807
Thomas writes in 1819
" My name his Thomas Caunce and England his my nation
Rufford his my dewelling place and heaven his my salvation.
When this you see remember me
When I have (past?) forgotten
When I ham dead and hin my grave
and all my bones are rotten"
below this in a different hand Thomas Sharrock repeats the first 4 lines
On the last page of the book a Joseph practices his name.
I have had some interesting replies from other listers, including this from 1841 census which could be the family ?
" have found a Thomas Caunce on the 1841 Census at Rufford, Ormskirk.
He is the oldest Thomas Caunce on the census.
He could be the one.
Thomas Caunce aged 50 Farmer born Lancs
Susan Caunce 47
Margaret " 25
Susan " 20
William " 18
Jane " 16
Anne " 11
James " 8
Thomas " 6
I do not have the 1851 Census.
He is not on the 1861 Census"
And the same generous person found this
"Thomas Sharrock 45 farmer
Jane 40
Betty 15
Ann 10
Jane 8
Thomas 5
Hugh 3
Richard Caunce 70"
This infers that the Caunces and Sharrocks were intermarried. On the 1841 Census there is no indication as to relationships. But it looks like Richard Caunce could be Jane's father.
I also have a contact descended from Jane and Thomas..
so you now know all that I know !
kind regards
May
