Occupation Interests / Re: Liverpool Pilots
« on: Saturday 08 February 14 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Shaun,
I have a 3x Gt Grandfather John Ball born 1824 to John Ball (the Pilot). He married Bridget McCoy 1848.  Address at marriage Denison Street, occupation mariner.  In 1861 they lived at 15 Prussia Street.   I have not found them in 1851 yet. However, my ancestor's Grandfather (Joseph the Pilot) had brothers William and Joseph (a Pilot) they could also have had sons named John.
There could be other cousins but I have not researched wider yet.

Thank you once again Shaun. I was just speaking to a friend about getting a subscription to britishnewspaperarchives. Your help is much appreciated. In fact I had been looking for William and found one listed as a watch finisher I'll just go back and try to find him again.

The Liverpool Mercury for Friday 5 February 1819 has a death announcement for Mary Ball:

On Saturday last, after a lingering illness, aged 62, Mrs Mary Ball, widow of the late Mr Joseph Ball, formerly master Pilot out of this port.

Shaun,
thank you once again that has been a great find. I am betting that the other Joseph Ball is also a relative probably son of the older Joseph.   Thanks again.

Per Barry Youde's "Beyond the Bar", John Ball was licensed as a pilot in 1817 and died in 1837.
Shaun
thank you for that information it helped me go back a further generation to his father Joseph Ball. According to his marriage in 1785 to Mary Owens he was also a pilot. Does he also appear in the Barrie Youde's book? By the way the only place selling the book seems to be Amazon for £25 second hand one copy only

Thanks Ainslie,

I have just given that a try and no luck.  Next time I am in Liverpool I'll see if there is a copy of the list at the Central Library.

Thanks again

Hello Dave,
are you still doing the look ups? I have just discovered an ancestor, John Ball marrying Ellen Fuller at St Peter's Priory in 1817 at which he gives his occupation Pilot. Any trace of him in the list of pilots?
