World War One / Can we identify this man by his uniform?
« on: Sunday 17 November 24 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
I have cut this picture down as I want to focus on this soldier from WW1. The man I have cut out of the picture is my Gt Grandfather Sgt Herbert Johnson. I am trying to work out if this might be one of his brothers? He had three brothers serve in the war. Arthur Johnson 18641 (I have asked about him in a different post). Then i have been told Fred although I haven’t confirmed any record of him but have been told by an elderly relative. And the fourth one we are stumped over (there were quite a lot of brothers). The family is from Creswell in Derbyshire but have ties with the Goole/North Notts border area as well.

Maybe if we can identify the uniform, we can work out the person. Would the braid signify anything? Sorry this is a little vague. I have been hindered by the fact that Johnson is such a common name.

Hi, I have found out that my Great Great Uncle, Arthur Johnson, was a soldier in the Great War. His roll number was 137571. I am not an expert in reading military records, would anyone be kind enough to assist?

And that would explain why there are no further records of him. So would this be common for crew to disappear and never return at some ports?

Thank you, the National Archives seemto be the same page as on Ancestry. However i can’t find anything else, any other records of his sea life.

I have just discovered my great x 3 uncle, Arthur Yates, born in Gringley on the Hill in Nottinghamshire served from 1890 in the Royal Navy. I know nothing about the navy so dont know where really to start. I have a list of ships he served on from document number 154657 on the uk Royal Navy register and that is it. Would anyone be prepared to give me some pointers?

Hi,

I am also a descendant of David and Mary Lewis, through their son George, so am also interested in this information.

Thank you Stevej60, it doesn’t surprise me as Sam was a farmer labourer before joining and his brothers were horsemen, but I’d never found this reference before.

World War One / Sergeant Andrew Lewis 49108 Machine Gun Corps
« on: Friday 06 November 20 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if someone was able to assist me with some research. I have recently discovered my Great Great Uncle, Andrew Lewis was a Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps, rol number 49108.

I have found his records but I have to admit, I’m not a military historian so much of it is lost on me ( I can do the very basic but more than that is over my head). I would appreciate anyone who can help me to sort through what happened to him and where he went and to put some meat on the bones so to speak.

Thank you in advance. Neil
