The surname was Knibbs, and his address on the marriage certificate was the 'Greyhound Inn'.

It has made such a delightful change from seeing the ever present 'Ag Lab'!

Liz
I would say that it made gypsies business legitimate. They had to have a licence or woukd be summonsed

General opinion  is  that  our  t7cker family  are  the  gypsies  in  town  there  are  alot of  newspaper articles  about  them  for  a ll kind  of  things  and  they  are v always  called  gypsies.  Non  of  the v other  you  found  on  the  net  adds up   date wise  regarding  the  the original William  ticket
Has  not  buried  with  his  wife.
They  had  19 children  12 survived.  They  were  very poor and  the  children  couldn't  wait  to  get  away  it  seems.you  were  probably  at dad's  funeral  the  other  month. They  weren't  butchers.  I'm  not  convinced  now  that  they  are  tucker or  were  married.  Hanah Anna or Harriet disappears  after  his  death  and  the  is  no  wedding  certificate yet found. They  were  in  Yeovil  in 1851 as  mat makers.  Not  on  any  other census before.  It is  says  according to  Mike and  hilda that  a brother of  William  worked  on  the  estate  in  Devon  as  Gardner  and  goes  wide  was  a cook and  they  married.  It  was  said  it  was  William and Mary but he  was  18 from  Taunton  and  she  was  16 from  Ireland.  Hope  that  helps

hhi this is my family too. they had 19  children according to the census but 7 dies. also they are /were a travelling family. i noticed he too changes his place of birth. we don't really know where he is from or even if he was a tucker. according to the 1851 census william and anna/ hannah their parents were living in Yeovil he was a mat maker. the next census they are living in taunton as mat makers also again telling different places of birth. It seems odd to us that we cannot find any marriage records for them and that william died of chronic bronchitis  aged 72 on certificate with his wife anna but he was buried alone..  Ellen went to live in london and married a musician their son played in the orchestra in the strand palace hotel and died aged 33 of tb look up mary blakely on ancestry for more details of that 1. william and mary's son william married a travelling/gipsy woman called maryann manley , her mother was a 'welles' again a gipsy travelling family.

Hi, it's been very interesting reading your stories here.  I am apparently from a Romani background, my great grandmother was known as Maude of the caravan tribe, her maiden name was Woods, and she lived in the West Country, finally coming to rest in Gwent when she married a Tanswell.  My Grandmother, her elder sister and brothers all had high cheek bones, olive complexions and dark hair.   I have been looking into the family history a little but haven't got very far.  I would be very interested to hear from anyone who knew of the Woods family (Maude Woods).  I believe she was born in Wiltshire or Somerset.  I'll have to check on that.

The female line of the family have all got a 'gift' apparently, my Grandmother & Aunt were quite involved in various methods of fortune telling & healing, my grandmother was always telling me some natural herb or thing to use as a cure, and my aunt looked the part, being olive complexioned, high cheek boned and loved wearing her gold jewellery and brightly coloured clothing.
hi there is a good book called the gipsy scholar and its all about the woods family
