Hi. I am desendent of David and Mary kennedy. We have alot of info and photos back as far as 1881. Have you managed to go back further on this line??

Hi Mark

I'd be interested in seeing how your Kennedy line fits in with mine - as many Kennedy's in the area seem to be part of an extended family(ies). Happy to share what i have. Drop me a PM.

Regards

The earliest register was 1538 damaged in the Church Fire (Shepton Montague ) 1964, and Reverand Kenneth Ashcroft (vicar 1956) told a family member that he had personally traced the Vallis family back to the first register if 1538.

Wow - that must have been brilliant work by the Reverend - anyone got any records of his research ?

I read somewhere that there used to be Vallis family Reunions held at Shepton until about 10 years ago.

Ther's a lady called Denise Ottaway who has also been doing a lot of research on the Shpton Vallis families - I assume she has also been in touch with you?

Thanks for your kind addition to this thread Russ. I must admit that I had managed since the original request to add the various snippets of info you have kindly convoyed in your posting.

William Vallis was born 1814 not 1830 lived until 1897. He married Lavinia Garland in 1835 and had 6 children.

I do however have details of some additional children of William and Lavinia and would like to cross check this with you.

John b1836 married 1st in 1858 Ann Foot b~1834 and had 3 children - Henry John 1864-1939, Charles 1869 and William John 1875-1913.  John then married for a 2nd time in 1904 a Mary Jane Clarke b1842.

Julia 1837-1842
Emma b1839 (she must have died in infancy)
Emma b1841 (married Albert Martin - do you have any info on him??)
Ann c1845
Julia bc1845 married 1879 Henry Wallis
William b1847-1909 married Ann Sims
Henry 1848 married 1871 Martha Davis b1850
and lastly Pauline b1863 married 1888 Frank Edward Sly b~1863

William Vallis and Elizabeth Trim's 2nd son Walter served in the 3rd Hussars and later with his wife Cordelia ran the Shepton Montague Inn. Walter was gored to death by a bull in 1929

That was some snippets I didnt know - thanks!!

Linda

Not at all Linda  ;D  ;D - without contributions as per your valuable input & efforts I certainly wouldn't have ever expected the possibles that Elizabeth has kindly offered.

How Intriguing this is Liz!

Am I correct in my understanding that what your are reporting is the family I asked about are not named Vallis but actually Hiscox/Hiscock??

If so I have done some digging and have found that there is a reference to a Harry/Henry and his brother Charles Vallis b1862/1863 respectively whose mother is reported as a Martha Hiscox by a contemparary descendant (not verified).

With help from Forumites here is Harry/Henry at various times
1881 - Residence Higher Shepton, Shepton Montague, Somerset - with Charles
1891 - listed as FELIS - Residence Penmark, Glamorganshire
1901 - Residence Gilfach, Glamorganshire
1911 - Residence 6 John St, Bargoed, Glamorganshire

One of Harry's grandchildren is reported to have commented that before the brothers moved from Somerset to Wales their name was Hiscox!!

This would appear to be borne out by the 1871 entry of a Charles & Henry Hiscock - Residence Lower Shepton, Shepton Montague, Somerset

I also found a baptism of a Charles Vallis - 14-May-1874 Shepton Montague, Somerset
 - parents reported as James Vallis & Martha Hiscock!

However I suspect that this is actually an adoption - as I noted that in the 1861 for a James & Louisa Vallis they have a Martha Hiscox, visitor, occupation servant also a Sarah Hiscox age 2. The name Hiscox is transcribed as Hixon.
in 1871 this same household in Lower Shepton, Shepton Montague, Somerset
is composed of:

James Vallis, age 54, Ag Lab b. Shepton Montague
Louisa Vallis, wife, age 56 b. Bruton, Somerset
Harry Hiscox, visitor, age 9 b. Shepton Montague
Charles Hiscox, visitor, age 7 b. Newport, Wales

From the 1911 I got the following data on a Vallis family which are not to far away from where most of my lot come from - so they may be related - I looked through all my research files and I just cant tie any other info with of them up  ???

Census 1911 Mill Lane Castle Cary Somersetshire, all born Castle Cary

VALLIS, Eliza Head Widow 48
Emily Daughter Single 23
Percie Son Single 20
Elsie Daughter Single 18
William Son Single 16
Walter Son  10
Bertie Son  7
~~~~~~~~
I looked through the FreeBMD database and although there are some that could be "possibles" they are often in a different county!!
For example for Bertie the only nearest one I could find is:
Birth BMD Q4 1907 Vallis  Bertie James     Amesbury  5a 155
or for Walter: Q2 1902   Vallas  Walter     Camberwell  1d 926
and for Percy Q4 1888  VALLIS  Percy     Warminster  5a 138
I'd appreciate it if SKS could see if they can find this family group on the 1901 - or give me a sanity check please!!!
TIA - HiFly
