Casualties also appeared in the London Gazette. Cannot find a Marigold listed.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-notices

Added - the Gazette does not include hospital deaths which the newspapers papers do.

If he died would he appear in the local Irish newspapers or in the Army Chaplain records?

I was hoping he would show up in Crimean war records.  So no show.  He was stationed in Ireland in Dublin; that is where his son was baptised in 1852.  He has just disappeared.
Checking the newspaper reports the 11th Hussars sailed for the Crimea July/Aug 1854 from Ireland. By Nov 1854 reports appearing of casualties (killed/wounded/missing/prisoner) under rank/name. He doesn't appear in the list published 30 November.

Do you have access to newspapers. I cannot find him using the search facility so am checking the papers month by month - but it's a slow process.

No..don't have access to newspapers...but just wondering which ones in particular?  English/Irish ones?  Let me know and I will try and will continue to look.

Should add that a depot company continued at Newbridge, Ireland so no guarantee he was in the Crimea.

Attestation records for that period are rarer than hen's teeth.  The "incidents"  you refer to are his appearances in the censuses of those years.  There are two more appearances in the records of courts martial, one in 1846 and another in 1847.  These are in the National Archives document WO 86/5 and on the Fold3 element of Ancestry.

The only sure way of tracking a man in that period is to trawl (at Kew) the regiment's muster rolls.  This is a matter of using the known points of 1841 and  1851 and working backwards from the former until his first appearance in the roll and then going forward from 1851 until he leaves.  This will give you his service dates but little else.  The 1851 census says he is married, the 1841 does not have marital status.  There is a Q1 1851 marriage in Ipswich which may fit (he was stationed in East Anglia).

GRO do not have any military information and what you have and the additional info above I suggest is all there is.

Hello Max
I am making one more ditch effort in trying to find out what happened to James Marigold.  I have since established that his wife Elisabeth Hubbard married again in 1858 in Poplar, Mddx under the name of Mirrigold.  I didn't think this was her to begin with but have followed the couple since to New Zealand by 1861.  Amazing.
But I still don't know what happened to James.
From my previous notes I see that he was on the muster rolls in 1854.  But by 1855 he is not there.  However, there must be some notes on what happened to him; i.e. death; or change to another regiment; or purchase his way out of the Hussars.  I understand that there are sometimes notes at the end of end muster, and on a separate page.  So I am hoping you may know of someone who can look at the muster rolls for 1855 for James?  Can you recommend anyone.  I guess I would be willing to pay for this service as they would have to view these at the repository/National Archives or wherever they are held.
Please let me know if you know of anyone that could help me.  With thanks.

Not knowing the area well, (well at all), then it could be.  I wonder.  Good find.  I woinder if you know how far Alderton would be from the Bawdsey?  I think it is East Street the family were living in.  I'll check google maps too.

Having a lot of trouble trying to find Elisabeth Hubbard in the 1841 census.  She would have been 17 yrs.  and out working; but I wonder where?   She is not at home with her father George and mother Lucy.  They still had 5 children aged 12, 6, 5, 3, and 14 months.  She must have been working as a f.servant somewhere.  Would like to find her.  Any help really appreciated.

They did marry on 4th Feb 1851 in St Mathew Ipswich.

Oh, now that I can see; she gave birth in Ipswich 1848!  Ah - makes more sense now.

Then child baptised in Dublin where the father was stationed on 26th Sept 1852.

Has been good to get this sorted.

Thanks.
