I am a descendant of the Virginia/West Virginia Aylestock Family and have done a lot of research. I've been in contact with someone in your Canadian branch named Andre. We have a James Ailstock born in Virginia in 1802. Might this be your James Aylstock born in 1818? William, James, and Sally are all common names in our family.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate of James Aylstock (1844) and Emaline Johnston. James parents are listed as Sally Aylstock "born in slavery" and the name of the father is left blank. Might James Aylestock (1818) have been his uncle rather than father?
Hi o2bna10t, I am the one you're referring to from the Canadian branch. It's been quite a while for me since I looked into this but I would like to get back into it again.
James Aylstock (1844) and Emaline Johnston were my paternal great grandparents.
I was wondering if the marriage copy you are reffering to in your post came from this same link I found ---> http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/water84.htm

I would really like to find out more about your James Ailstock born in Virginia in 1802.
Any chance you would know his racial origin?

Cheers!
Andre

Hi o2bna10t and welcome to rootschat.

Since posting the Emaline request I have found she remained in Berlin, Waterloo Co. Ontario until her death in 1943

James Aylestock Sr. c.1844 USA is still my brick wall  ???  All I know about him is what is on his marriage certificate to Emiline and that a newspaper announcement states at the time of marriage he was "of Elmira".

James Aylstock ca.1818 USA and Hannah Aylstock ca.1819 USA, both are in Pelham, Monck, Ontario: he is head of household she is at the home of a young couple (maybe working there?) both James and Hannah state "married" I am assuming it's to each other :)  As you said my James Sr. (married to Emiline) put his mother's name as Sally and didn't know his father's name; so who is this couple? A couple of thoughts, uncle is one but there is also the possibility if James and Hannah's ages in 1881 are not correct they could be older and may even be Sally's parents making them my James Sr. grandparents. (I have another family member whose documented est. birth year ranged anywhere from 1814 to 1835)

I'm still following some recent leads regarding this James 1818 but any additional input you may have I'd be more that happy to hear from you. will pm you my email address
Denise
Hi Denise, was wondering if you ever got any more info on the James Aylstock ca.1818 USA and Hannah Aylstock ca.1819 USA couple?

Cheers!

Andre

Hi all! I'm hoping some of you will be able to help.  Perhaps DeniseA?  I'm looking for any
information regarding my great grand father James Ailstock or James William Ailstock (same
man) approx d.o.b 1844 with birth place in the USA. S/O Sally Alystook. Moved to Ont. Canada
between d.o.b. and 1884.
Was married to Emaline Johnston of Ont. on 14 Apr 1884.
Marriage Place: Berlin, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada
Marriage Registration Number: 011665.
A year later, on the 6th of March 1885 they had one son, William Ailstock (my grandfather).
This only child, William Ailstock , got married to Jemima Redella (Minnie)Lawson with d.o.b of 4 Nov 1888.
On a 1911 Ontario Census I found, they had 2 daughters listed, both are my aunts and are
now passed away: Mabel d.o.b Sept 1909 and Mary d.o.b Feb 1911.
REF: Line no. 29 to 32 of page 7 of 1911 Ont. census District no. 133 North Wellington, Pell
Township.

It was litteraly shocked when I found my grandfather's name spelled Ailstock in that Ontario
1911 census, especially since no one in all of my aunts or uncles had never passed on that
information to the Aylestock familly here in Canada, at least not in all of the years I was
trying to build my family tree.  :o
My dad's name and all of his brothers and sisters (perhaps only Mabel and Mary) has always
been spelled Aylestock as far as I know.

I would really really like to know when did the Aylestock spelling came about or if the name
Aylestock was it simply misspelled in the 1911 Ont. census?
A few years ago, at the time of my 1911 census finding, I contacted my only surviving aunts
at the time "Rella Aylestock" but I was never able to get this resolved with her.
I believe all direct children of William Aylestock and Jemima Lawson have passed away now so
it might even be more difficult trying to resolve this mystery!

Thanks a bunch!  :)

Andre
