Australia Lookups completed / Re: Emmigration to Oz

That is of interest. I haven't done much of late on my GGGrandfather James Stevens. A friend has just returned from Norfolk Island. Do wish I had seen your post before she got back. I am trying to establish when and where he arrived from England. I have come forward from 1850 with him marrying in Hobart. May I ask if you are a relative or what makes you interested in him? Regards x

Trying to find arrival of James Stevens from Salisbury, England. Have him in Tasmania 1850 and he was a Constable on Norfolk Island prior to that date and then after at various ports of Tasmania. He came to Victoria 1879 where he died 4 years later.

Constable James Stevens marries Mary Callaway Hobart, 23 May 1850. He dies in Victoria, 23 July 1883 and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetry, with wife Mary and eldest child Mary Jane.
His death certificate names him as Constable James Stevens dying in Hotham, Victoria where he had lived for 4 years (after coming from Tasmania).

He is a bit of a mystery. James Stevens was my G/G/Grandfather on my mothers side. My mother was Edna Stevens -  her father was Norman James and his father was Henry, who was one of James Stevens sons. I have his marriage and death certificate but they only provided his birth country and approx. age. Mary Callaway (his wife) came here on Sir Charles Napier with her parents and siblings. Arrival was 17/2/1843. How exactly are you related?
I have traced the family forward but am having trouble going backwards from his marriage to Mary, even though I have only been at this for two years. Look forward to a reply with anything you may like to share. Cheers Glendreath

Sorry I have just got your message and thankyou. Would you think that James may have been a convict or though his police records say he was free to colony? Where could I go to maybe find his arrival to Norfolk Island? I have contacted Tasmania but only got the police information. Regards Glendreath

Hi Trish - Yes James marries Mary Callaway 23/5/1850 in Hobart, Tasmania. Mary comes to Tasmania with her parents Richard Callaway and Mary Burridge.
They arrive 17/2/1843 on Sir Charles Napier as general immigrants.
Mary is born in Crediton, Devon, England 4/2/1832.
I contacted Tas. Archives and paid for a search on James Stevens but they only gave me some Police Files which showed his postings.  His marriage certificate does not give much information other than he was from England, Chief Constable Norfolk Island, age 32years and a Bachelor.
Not sure what the Free to Colony relates to on Police record - Tasmania or Norfolk Island?? What would you think? Regards Glendreath

How do I trace arrivals to Tasmania pre 1850. James Stevens born abt 1818 Salisbury, England. Supposed to be free to the colony then joins Police Force and lists his previous Trade as a Baker.
