Not a very common name, and most seem to be concentrated in this Devon area.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Mary Barnes 1861 Southwark
« on: Thursday 30 June 16 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Hit a bit of a brick wall.  Looking for a Mary Barnes (possibly Mary Ann Barnes) born in Southwark 1861. Married a Henry John Saunders (sometimes listed as Harry) and had children Mary Ann, Ernest, Eliza, Ellen, Rebecca and May.  By 1911 only Mary, Rebecca (my great grandmother) and May are listed.  The census is a complete mess so to be honest I'm not sure if Mary was quite all there it's that bad.  I've really not found any evidence of her birth or parents yet, which is what I'm after. I'm only about 85% sure her name was Barnes as I haven't yet got Rebecca's birth certificate to confirm. 1891 and 1901 they are in Southwark, 1911 they are in Bermondsey.

Wow, how confusing with the names. In the same generation it went from Rigling, to Rigglesby, to Riglin/Riglen.  Thanks, these have been great pointers!

Man, I screwed that up.  I have no idea where I plucked that date and place from, especially as I'm pretty sure there are children from before that date anyway.  Still, I still have a mystery on my hands in whom Mary Ann is and whether she is his first wife (and therefore mother to all the children).

Essex / James RIGLIN and Mary Ann ? married 1822

Trying to find out who James Riglin (b 1787 Kelvedon Hatch) married in Romford 1822.  Ancestry, FamilySearch and FreeBMD all give a list of possibles, but there are 2 Mary's on there and no Mary Ann.  The 1851 lists him and M A Riglin, and 1861 him and Mary A, which is where I have got the presumption that his wife is Mary Ann, but I don't have any proof that his is the same marriage that happened in 1822.

Other than ordering the certificate, any ideas how to track down the name of his spouse?

Oh wait I was looking at a different one.  Hrrrm.  I've not heard of an Eliza or Ernest before, but some things do match up.  More investigation needed!

I think I see what record you mean, but nothing really matches up with that.  Not convinced it's them.  Thanks for looking though!  This family is turning out to be quite tricky.

Do you know if Mary Ann is Harry's daughter, or could she be Mary's?

According to the 1911 they only have 3 children still living, but they have four daughters with them.

I'm still trying to figure that out.  Mary Ann was born a good few years before they were married and I did find a couple of possible other marriages for Henry, but with a common name it's hard to work out if it's actually him or not.  Mary Ann is not on the 1901 census with them.  I was hoping finding out Mary's maiden name might help.
