The Common Room / Re: william gower abt 1765 Surrey
« on: Thursday 13 June 19 19:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi Karen.
A bit late but..

From the Will of Elvy Dean Ridley,a son of Henry and Alice Ridley. This Will is dated July 18,1838 and proved on Sept.9,1843.

Extracts.

"my two sisters Mary Gower of Crowhurst Surrey and …"
"10 children of my said sister Mary Gower"

He then lists the 10 children as,
William Gower of Lingfield
John Gower of Crowhurst
Edward Gower of Croydon
Stephen Gower of Beckenham
Thomas Gower of the same place
Elvy Gower of Brixton
Maria ?Henning? of Poplar
Diana ?Berree? of Barnes Surrey
James Gower at present in ?France?
Amos Gower

It was possible that the first known child,Mary Gower had died when Elvy wrote his Will. There was a burial for a Mary Goward at Crowhurst on April 27,1837.

But there was an extra child named as William. As the names are in date order(apart from Elvy and Maria, who are reversed),William takes precedence over all which suggests he was the firstborn, although I do not know where or when.

I hope this may add to your research.
Dave.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Lookup request for MARTIN baptisms Banstead
« on: Friday 23 December 11 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi CL.

There do not seem to be any baptisms of MARTIN children to these parents at Banstead in the 1779-1789 timeframe.

I can confirm Carole's finding for Bethania, and correct in all detail except that the transcription shows the mother's name as KEZIA.

The above was noted from transcriptions compiled by the West Surrey Family History Society.

Checking through transcripts of the Warlingham Registers I can find no reference of Thomas being baptised at Warlingham. No marriage found between Thomas and Sarah at Warlingham.

The only reference to a marriage was on Jan.7,1811.Thomas Smith to Sarah Harding.

Hi Leanne.

I think that you touched on an important point in your last posting, which is because the principal of a business dies, the name of the business may continue.

A change of business name does not neccessarily indicate that the owner has died, with the opposite being equally a possibility. But it may be a good guide.

Dave.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: BALCOMBE family of Horne, Tandridge, Burstow
« on: Wednesday 29 September 10 23:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi Andrea.

Neither James Balcombe, nor his wife Mary, appear in the burials of the following parishes up to 1840.

Burstow,Crowhurst,Godstone,Horne,Nutfield,Oxted,Tandridge.

This information comes from microfiche of the records of those parishes listed.Maybe a plea to anyone who has a copy of the Surrey Burials Index may help.

Both the Parish Records and the Surrey Burials Index are published by the West Surrey FHS.

Regards,
Dave.

Hi Jane.

Noting your location, would it be possible to get someone to phone them,or is the number not obtainable?

Dave.

It would be more common practice to have the internment at the Mitcham Road Cemetery but I see that Ross Road is toward the edge of the Borough at South Norwood which would bring the Beckenham Cemetery more into the picture.

There is also a possibility that he is at West Norwood Cemetery.

A possibility is to check the local Funeral Directors of 1953 and see if they still exist.A date of death would help in this.Local Trade Directorie may be found at Croydon Local Studies Library
