People fled Rona to Raasay, and were driven back.

An interesting nostalgic look can be found here:

Hi Kray, a quick glance at deaths in Dunoon on ScotlandsPeople with the criteria "male", 1970-2006, age 65-95 reveals five Pollocks and three Nelsons, so if no one local answers your query, you could just try looking at DCs!

Hi Wyanga, I had a look at the census return on S.P. and am swithering between Baluacaber and Balnacaber. Neither option bows to Google.
Although the name is written three times, I am not certain.
He certainly seems to have been an enterprising gent., your Alexander with a wife forty years his junior, her family living in and his brother in law the only wage earner as an ag. lab. What does his D.C. reveal?
Strange to see his daughter Helen in two extracted entries with the same date but three years apart. A mistake or early death?
I.G.I doesn´t reveal much in Wigton except that someone was busy with a tree submitting eighteen years ago!

Hi again, I had a quick look at the O.S. map 1inch from 1854-69, and the name Buthkollidar is there, along with Cluniter, the next house to the south, so it was in use in that survey with that spelling.

Hi Wyanga, can you tell me the names of the properties on either side of Baluacaber in the 1851 census?
I am not very optimistic about this name/pronunciation change, but I do have the valuation roll for the Shore Road Dunoon to Innellan and could confirm whether the correct properties were on one or other side - if they were built in 1851!

Guid hunting, and a very warm welcome to RootsChat.

Thank you Sandy for that.
I think that if I am not mistaken, Helensburgh was in Dunbartonshire, at least according to Bartholomew´s map from 1890, so perhaps a moderator could do a flitting.

On a lighter note (than a gravestone), I remember well in my youth how much a good  friend of mine and myself enjoyed shortening Helensburgh to "Hel" when in the area, just to tease his mother, an upright minister´s wife.
We didn´t dare however if the dog collar himself was present!

Whenever a British subject is born, is married, or dies abroad then it must be registered with the British embassy. The Embassy then sends the information back to the relevant authority i the UK in this case Scotland.

Hi Gary, is this not a little optimistic; I suspect that registry is optional, though often advisable to avoid losing rights.

Living abroad, I registered my bairns´births so they would be eligible for British passports, but have never registered my marriage. We´ll see what happens when I go the way of all flesh, but somehow I doubt the embassy will be involved.

Things would be much easier for us all on the other hand if we could depend on our forbears´registration!

Dumfriesshire / Re: Did Bonnie Prince Charlie travel thru Canonbie in the 1745?

A minute of Googling produced this:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/charles/35.htm

so I think you can assume there is a good chance your ancestor jumped ship in Canonbie, about five miles to the southwest of the point where the Jacobites crossed the border en route for Carlisle, and only a mile from Liddel Water which they seem to have followed; whether that would be considered an admirable thing to do is perhaps doubtful, but probably very sensible!

Note " On arriving in the neighbourhood of Carlisle, desertion had diminished the prince's army by some hundreds." from above article!

Hi Mab, I had a quick look on "192" and could only find two houses in UK with the name "The Shieling", one in Hatton, Derby, and t´other in Bellingham Northumberland. So not promising, I´m afraid.

The Post Office at Furnace could probably confirm this:

The Post Office, Furnace, Inveraray, Argyll, PA32 8XN

No email or ´phone number that I could find quickly.
