World War One / average wage for ordinary soldier in WWI
« on: Tuesday 07 January 14 09:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, I was wondering about soldiers pay in WWI. My Great Grandfather was in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers from 1915 until 1919. He was in France for most of his army career. He had a wife and eight children to support. Would anyone know how much he would have been paid per week? I doubt he could send money to Ireland so was the British army paying some money to his wife and children or would they have had to look after  themselves? I have found this site very useful for information and any input or a steer in the right direction would be great. Thanks keith

World War One / Re: Royal Dublin Fusiliers Labour Corps

Hi Ken, .  It tells us that James Pidgeon served as a Private 15415 with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and then served as Private 407867 with the Labour Corps. The next section of the card reveals what medals he was entitled; it says he received the Victory Medal, 15-Star Medal and the British Medal. None of these medals survive in our family today. On the 19th of December 1915, James Joseph entered the theatre of war in France. I think I might have found a Battalion to match but any help would be great. Keith

Family History Beginners Board / The Royal Dublin Fusiliers Labour Corps
« on: Tuesday 31 December 13 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
I am writing my thesis on my own family history and could use some help. My great grandfather was in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Labour Corps from 1915 to 1919. He served at the Somme. I was wondering what type of work would the men of the Labour Corps have done at the Somme? Any feedback would be most welcome. Keith.

Dublin / Re: Does anone know what a 'house jobber' is or does?

Hi genechaser, yeah  seen that before, its the closest to a proper description as I could find. Its just that I know that the man had very little money, maybe he was "lying" on his marriage cert, like people would tell lies on their C.V. today, just to impress the inlaws (smile) thanks for the feedback: keith

Hi, I was hoping someone could shed light on this. On my great, great grandfathers marriage cert he gives his occupations as a 'house jobber'. He was living in Dublin city in 1876. Does anone know what a 'house jobber' is or does? any information would be great. All the best Keith  :)

Hi, does anyone have any idea where the Dublin evening mail news paper offices where in Dublin city? It was launched in 1823, it proved to be the longest lasting evening paper in Ireland. Any information on the paper would be really helpful  ;)

Hi David, I was trying to  send you a private message but apparently I have to comment on three threads to prove that I am not spam before I can send a message. I'm just looking for some leads for genealogy. Keith

Hi all, I am writing a thesis on my own family's genealogy & have discovered that my great grandfather also got an army cottage in 16 Churchtown Great. He was in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers from 1915-1918. His name was James Joseph Pidgeon. I was wondering if any of you have any information on these houses. I read that a member David has a photo of when the houses where 1st built. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards Keith Pidgeon.
