I’m currently overseas so don’t have access to my records, but from memory Bruce Gunn married Thomas Cannon’s sister, also called Mary.

Hi Carol,

I also have your Mary Ann (married Henry Milner) as the daughter of George Cannon (convict on Mangles) and Mary Ann Dean (convict on the Majestic).  She had a daughter, also called Mary Ann.  I am not sure how much information you have, but I have a bit.  Feel free to message me and we can swap information if you are interested.

Interestingly, it seems that George Cannon's son (Thomas, who is my relative), married Mary Louisa Young, who was first married to Bruce Gunn (the one who then seemed to marry his sister, Mary Ann)  They all appear to have lived in Paterson St.

Cheers!

Hi Kevin,

Sorry for the late reply - I have moved back to Australia and changed my email address, so didn't realise you had posted.  I would love to chat to you privately - I will send you a pm and hope that you will get it!

Peter - thank you very much for the information.

Cheers,

Jen

Australia / Re: HARVEY, Samuel - South Australia (Mid North)

Thanks Chris.  Upon further checking, it looks like Jesse may have been the eldest son of Samuel.  All of Samuel's brothers and sisters appear to have come over to SA (I got this from someone else's research), but I can't find any record of Samuel or his family coming over.

Yes, that's them.  Thank you.  One of the possible parents I had was Ann Hill, so perhaps that is a good possibility.  I didn't notice the "Hill" middle names.

Australia / HARVEY, Samuel - South Australia (Mid North)
« on: Friday 17 January 14 04:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to find some more information about Samuel HARVEY.  He lived in and around Yacka/Chinkford in South Australia.  His death notice states he was born around 1810 and that he was a colonist of 37 years, meaning he came to SA around 1854.  He died in 1891.

I can find records for 2 sons - Samuel Jr (d. 1903, married Mary Ann Sheerlock) and Robert (youngest son), 1844-1917 (married Esther Kelton).  Robert's death notice states that he was a colonist of 66 years.  There is also possibly an eldest son called Jesse, who was married around the same area and has a father named Samuel.

I believe they were all farmers.

I am unable to find a wife or any travel records for the family,  A few people on Ancestry have the mother as either Ann or Eliza but I haven't found any proof of this myself, and the census records in England don't quite match up with the information that I have found with regards to children and ages (not that I am necessarily correct or the children may have had slightly different names or died, etc.).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jen

Australia / Re: Is this the same person - George/Charles CANNON?

From reading the article from Giblet, it seems that it is the same person.  The newspaper article mentions George Cannon and William Goodlad being indicted for the same offense that Charles Cannon and William Goodlad were convicted of in the court records.  It also mentions that George had just returned from being transported, and that he was well known to police as a "desperate character".  I think this may be the same George who was convicted in 1829 and sentenced to 7 years transportation, but I am also unable to find any record of a George/Charles transported at this time.

Was it common for these men to return from transportation?  I was under the impression that they had to pay their own way back if they wanted to go back to England.

Thank you Judith.

I had not seen the other conviction.  It could well be him - it seems to be in the same area.  I also had not seen the prison hulk register information.  I appreciate your efforts.

I would be very interested in some more information about the son, Thomas.  I have some already, and he is my ancestor, but any more would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Jen

Thanks Neil.  I have seen both transcribed and original records, and they appear to be transcribed correctly.  There are no aliases noted in the convict records.

Also, I have not been able to find a record of a George Cannon being born in Berkhampstead/Great Berkhampstead in 1809/10.  I have looked at a microfilm of the original records.

I am leaning towards them being the same person, but I don't want to rush to unwarranted conclusions!
