Hi

Not an answer to your specific question, but you might find the following link of interest:

Martin

We meet again, Martin ;)

Thanks for your help on that, Martin, that was a goldmine of information. Two things arose out of it. One was the quest to find out about Edward Gill, and the other was to find out how Charles McCarthy's father Florence drowned on duty. I've been unsuccessful on both so far.

Cork / Re: Hobbs and Harris Families in Cork

Just on the Hobbs name, one of the financial commentators in Ireland is a guy called Eddie Hobbs, http://www.eddiehobbs.com/, and he is from Cork. In fact he played rugby in the same club I was played in, when we were all much younger ! I'm fairly sure that his father played for the club before him, so the Cork link might go back further. There's a contact tab on his website, so perhaps you could take a shot in the dark and contact him.

Fragments of the 1851 survive....the following is from Claire Santry's excellent website

Most of the surviving fragments are for Co. Antrim and the single townland of Clonee, Co. Fermanagh. These are available at PRONI in Belfast and at the National Archives in Dublin (see Resources below). In addition, PRONI holds some population census returns for parts of what is now Northern Ireland. The National Archives in Dublin holds extracts for some parts of Co. Monaghan and lists of heads of households for Dublin City and one ward in Belfast. The Genealogical Office (see Resources below) holds extracts of this population census for some Co. Kilkenny parishes. - See more at: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/population-census.html#sthash.z0MmYHOT.dpuf

Family History Beginners Board / Emilia Gill

I'm currently researching my family history and my grandmother's grandfather & grandmother were Charles McCarthy and Emilia Gill. He was in the RIC at the time, and originally from Cork (although born in Bovisand near Plymouth, in 1834, when his father was in the Coastguard). They were married in Liscannor, Co. Clare on 4 Feb 1864, where he was stationed. Her father was an Edward Gill and the marriage cert shows that he was alive at the time, and was a farmer. On the RIC record it says that the Emilia's native county was Galway West Riding. Charles was 30 at time of marriage, while Emilia had minor crossed out and replaced with Full, so we can assume she was at most 18.

I've drawn a blank at finding where Edward Gill is from, can anyone help ?
