Shropshire / Re: Longdon on Tern Mill
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 12:23 BST (UK)  »
I can`t help much with your query but have you tried searching www.shropshirearchives.org.uk

From there it appears it was a water corn mill owned by the Duke of Sutherland and rented from him by your relation`s employer.
Also there was a big warehouse now converted to housing.
Hope this little is of some help.

Thank you so much Bookbox. I thought it clearly Peregrine but could not remember my declensions.
Also Elizabeth Thomas had brothers, surely had it been a male one of those brothers would have administered?
Supposedly a Peregrina was betrothed, there was a duel in which her intended was killed, and Peregrina hung herself, but this is the only evidence. No baptism, no burial, only "children" mentioned in father`s will.
Thank you very much.

Technical Help / printing a transparent background
« on: Saturday 14 September 19 21:11 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to edit photos so that the background is transparent?? ie no ink is used.

I like to print some of the better photos I take at the archives, mainly maps or text, but it seems to use an awful lot of ink when for example I print a photo of a map I think a lot of ink is used making the background a greyish colour whereas I think unprinted would be fine.
Have tried my printer options, fiddling about in Paint, and have Irfanview but can`t find transparent anywhere.

I know I should be thoroughly modern and just view them on my laptop, but I do like to be able to study them without having the computer on sometimes.
I have a Kodak Verite 55 printer.

Ideas please
Thanks

Hi Tom,
Is this the Stephen Bennion that married Martha Ikin in 1823? She died 1827 buried Whixall CofE and left daughter Elizabeth Bennion who is my husband`s gtgtgrandmother. I found a marriage license for Stephen Bennion widower 1831, to Mary Webb, at Hodnet, but then lost all trace. Are you descended from the 2nd marriage?? Or have I missed a child from the first marriage? There was a John born and buried 1826 that I know of.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Robert Watson and Margaret Chalmers
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
Amazingly George Christie had married another Margaret before he died. This threw me a bit. He married Margaret Dingwall o.s. Christie, widow in Dundee in 1864. His parents were James Christie, sawyer and Helen Gow on marriage and death certs. Andrew Cobb, perhaps brother of Margaret Cobb was a witness.

Many thanks for the help.

Wow!!
Thank you so much Forfarian.
I do use Freecen, but don`t know why I never noticed Aberdeenshire at the top of the list. I can think of lots of things I can look up there. Just assumed it covered England and Wales. Only.

Many thanks for finding George Christie - I had paid for that marriage to Margaret Robb but did not know whether I had the correct one. Just says both of this parish.

Thank you so much - going to SP now

Many thanks for the pointers, Forfarian.
I posted without checking my old research as I am stuck on this. I have now checked my notes and James Christie`s father was, according to his death cert on which his son did not know his mother`s name, George Christie, a store keeper. James is always in Montrose on the censuses. He married Helen Scott there.
Janet Robbie nee Watson is I believe grandmother of Janet Aitken, her death cert gives her parents as Thomas Watson, lab and Janet Watson, nee Watson as her parents.
Joseph Watson was in London before his marriage to Mary Ann Steel  early 1830`s. She was born Richmond, London but could perhaps have had Scottish ancestry??? In London on all censuses. They never used Janet as a name for children, but did use Walker and Macdonald as middle names.

Sorry should not  have posted on this thread, just hoped something rang a bell with the original poster.
P.S. Have not been able to find George Christie on the census - Scotlands people is expensive if you do not already have most of the information.pps Or a George Christie marrying a Watson.

Thanks
Jackie
