Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Graham of Wetheral
« on: Sunday 05 January 25 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks very much!  Yes the number of Grahams creates a real tangle.

It's curious that Eden Brow wasn't listed as the residence.  He listed that as his birthplace on the 1861/1881 census but gave Scotby in 1871.  The gap in children is also curious.
I found Emma and Thomas living with their mother in Botchergate in 1851.  Mary is widowed, age 53 and born in Coathill.
I can't locate them in the 1841 census. I guess I'm stuck on this line for the moment!

I was curious if there is anymore information on the marriage of Margaret Graham to Richard Slack in 1808 such as witnesses?
I also have some other known Graham's at Wetheral so I'll detail them for you which may help with some of your sorting.

James Graham b. 1788 at Irthington s/o of my Robert & Mary married Eleanor Harkness in 1826 at Gretna Green.  Their eldest son, Robert, was baptised at Wetheral in 1827.  Their other children were baptised at Carlisle.  The family was living at St Cuthbert in 1841 and Botchergate in 1851.

On a different branch of my family Isabella Warwick bap 1793 Kirklinton, daughter of my ancestors Richard Warwick & Isabella Sinclair married Joseph Graham in 1811 at St Mary, Carlisle. Their early children were bap at Carlisle but they were living in Wetheral by about 1827 where son William was bap in 1827, Robert in 1827, John 1830, William 1833, William 1837 and Mary Jane 1840.  The family was living in Wetheral in 1841 and emigrated to the US in 1842.

I'm pursuing some DNA matches in Ancestry with a Graham line at Wetheral so thought I'd post the info here in hopes someone may recognize it.  It may be connected to my own Graham line of Irthington
William Graham b. abt 1828 at Eden Brows, Wetheral (according to census records).  William married Isabella Nevins and lived in Durham
I had thought he was a possible son of John & Mary Graham living at Wheelbarrow Hall, Wetheral in 1841/1851.  But that William appears to remain in Wetheral.  I haven't been able to find another William.  Eden Brows is very close to Wallace Field.  My Graham line does have a connection there.  Margaret Graham b. 1778 Irthington, daughter of Robert Graham & Mary Henderson (my ancestors) married Richard Slack in 1808 at Wetheral.  Margaret and son Joseph are living at Wallace Field in 1841, also in the household are Mary Graham, age 65, James Graham age 40 and Richard Graham age 20.  In the 1861 there is a Graham family living at Eden Brown.  William Graham, age 68, b. Arthuret, Jane age 67 b. Kirklinton, Richard, 40 b. Kirklinton, George 37, b. Kirklinton, but I don't know if they're connected or not.
Any info appreciated.
Thanks,
Cody

Hi Christopher,

I've recently found an Ancestry DNA match between my Earl line and the line of Thomas Earl of Wigton.  I'm trying to triangulate with a few other cousins, to see if it's a legitimate Earl match or not or along another line.
My line moved from Yorkshire to Wetheral, Cumberland around 1797 where John Earl was a miller. John was born in Bolton on Swale, Yorkshire in 1759 and married Alice Alderson at Middleton Tyas in 1783.  There is room in the family for Thomas, but I haven't located any baptism. John died at Warwick Bridge in 1813.

Devon / Re: William STANBURY born 4 Oct 1796 Hatherleigh, Devon.

Hi there,
The Angell connection to the Crowhurst Surrey family has been around for a while, however it's important to note there is absolutely no supporting proof that it's correct.  There are more local sources that indicate a local origin for the family.
So the Morrish Angell baptised in 1665 at Hatherleigh and who m. Mary Chappell was the son of James Angell and Mary Lange.  This couple married in 1664 at Hatherleigh.  The name Morrish/Maurice is unusual and key to identifying an origin for James.  There are no Angell's in the 1641 Protestation Return for Hatherleigh so they did move in from somewhere else.
There is a baptism for a James Angell in 1642 at Great Torrington (Find My Past parish records) son of Morrishe & Margarett.  This is fairly close to Hatherleigh.  I could not find a marriage and there is only 1 other child baptised, Dorothy in 1640. Morrishe is listed as Morris Angle in the 1641 Protestation Return for Great Torrington.  The Great Torrington church was blown up during the Civil war in 1645/6. It seems likely this Morris was buried at Hatherleigh in 1669.  So sometime between 1642 and 1669 the family moved to Hatherleigh.  In the Bishops Transcripts for Great Torrington I found a baptism for Morris in 1613 son of Pethericke or Patrick Angell and Margaret his wife.  There were 4 more children baptised in Great Torrington. There is a burial for Patrick in 1645/6 and a will index entry at Great Torrington.  I found a baptism for Patrick in 1588 at Monkleigh (borders Hatherleigh) son of Thomas Angell or Anger and Amye his wife. This Thomas is listed in the 1569 Muster Roll at Monkleigh and listed as suppling a Harquebusier (musket).  This would indicate he was relatively well off.  Thomas and Amye married in 1573 at Monkleigh however there was no surname given for her.  They had 2 other children baptised at Monkleigh.  Thomas is buried in 1597 at Great Torrington (Bishops Transcripts).  Thomas would have been born circa 1545 and very few parish records go back that far.  I do have Devon tax records for 1524-1580.
In summary I believe this is a much more likely origin for our Angell family.

Oh wow, that is fantastic.  Thank you!
Would you able to tell me if there are additional McCracken's listed?

Hi there,
I've noticed the reference to the 1828 Congregation Record and I was hoping it might show my family?
James McCracken lived at Maine North in the 1831 census with 4 males and 6 females in the household.  Known children are Robert and Sarah and possibly James.  In addition the following could be children, Marcus, Joseph, Mary Ann, Martha and Jane.
In the 1859 Griffiths, Robert is living on the farm.
Thanks.

Hi there,
I realize this post is several years old, but hoping you're still interested.  I noted your comments about the Elizabeth Stanbury bap at Brixham in 1784.  She is my ancestor and she was the daughter of Peter Stanbury and Ann Angell.  She married ? Smith firstly, and secondly Richard Heard in 1810 at East Stonehouse.  Richard was a mariner.  They named some of their children as follows: Ann Angel Heard and Jemima Jane Stanbury Heard.  In the 1851 census Elizabeth gives her birthplace as Brixham.  Their daughter who is my ancestor Elizabeth Peters Heard married Philip Thomas Nancollas Bennett.  In the 1881 census she is living with her cousin, Mary Friend.  This Mary is Mary Fewins b. abt 1831 Hatherleigh d/o John Fewins and Ann Stanbury, which further cements the connection.
I have been working with some Stanbury DNA matches through Ancestry.  An intriguing match is a descendant of Jane Stanbury b. abt 1780 and married William Collins in 1809 at Okehampton.  I am just trying to work out her parentage, there are 3 candidates, but one possibility goes back to Samuel of Mary of Inwardleigh.
