Essex / Re: O'oo Cottage Thundersley

Hi Natalie
I have spoken to two people who may have known your relatives but unfortunately neither could recall a family by the name of Morris or shine any light on why the cottage got the name O'oo.

The proper name is Hillside Cottage, although our friend says that when she was a girl it was referred to as Scudder's Cottage, and I'm pleased to say that it still exists. Undoubtedly it is internally substantially different from when our respective families lived there as then it was divided in two with my family (the Scudders) living in the right hand side as you look at the building. Fortuitously, from the outside at least, it hasn't changed greatly being, I think, a listed building and probably one of the last Essex weatherboard cottages left in the area. The division of the property would explain the overlapping dates you mention. I have some reasonably current photographs of the outside and if you would like to PM me your email I'll find them and send them to you.

Unfortunately my great grandfather, Stephen Scudder, didn't own the property - as so many in the area he was a farm worker and I doubt that he was ever in the position to buy his own house. I seem to recall my grandmother saying that it was rented - I have some notes from conversations when she was alive and if you will bear with me I'll see if there is anything in them that will help and email it to you.

You are most welcome - Thundersley is a main focus of my research having grown up there and being descended from the Scudder and Bridge lines, both of which seem to have had a long history in the area.

Further to my last I've just found my copy of Babbington's book and photograph no. 104 shows the Thundersley football team c. 1922 and it identifies Johnny Bamber as the goalkeeper. I notice from your other posts you are related to a Bamber,

Hi

My grandmother lived at O'oo Cottage on Daws Heath, Thundersley for a considerable number of years - from the 1890s until she married in the 1920s. If you are still wanting to find out more I will check with a family friend who has lived on the Heath all her life (now in her 90s) and see if she can throw any light on the reason for the name.

Hi

Sorry I can't help with any individual, but the pub shown behind the charabanc is very likely to be the White Hart - the bay window immediately behind the vehicle is, I think still there, and certainly other sources show it as a Baddow Brewery house around 1900. Also the vehicle has an HJ registration which is/was an Essex series.
The school photograph looks as if it was posed outside the old school in Church Road, part of which at least was constructed from/cladded with corrugated metal sheeting. I remember it being the library and scout hut in the 1960s.
If you can get a copy, Terry Babbington's book Thundersley a Pictorial History has a number of 1920s photographs including the school with some of the individuals named which may help

Hi

Unfortunately the Cross Keys has recently had a substantial fire and now awaits, hopefully, a full rebuild.
Royal Wootton Bassett has a Community magazine and the latest edition has a short article on the pub on page 5 along with a B&W photograph of Bert Lawrence, blacksmith, shoeing a pony in the pub yard. No date, but apparently the smithy at the pub finished in the 1950s. Article also mentions a Dr Brinkworth who apparently lived next door.
It may be of interest to you and you can contact the editor, Stella Taylor on stella.taylor@tesco.net

Stan

Thank you for the post - yes I would like to see the will - being new to the site not sure about the protocol of including my email address in a post but I'll try and PM you.

I can certainly confirm that Bertram was known as Bubbles within the family and I have certainly heard my grandmother refer to him as such.

Steve

Dear Stan

In respect of your post re Daphne Benson and Dennis Bridge they were my aunt and father respectively, unfortunately now both deceased. Please call off any research in Leicestershire - don't know where that came from as we are in the South West.

I've emailed Rob Lanting about my Scudder connection and will try to get to the ceremony on the 29th.
