Hi Rosie,

Yes you are correct! Richard was the son of James Ellwood. I have found a document on Ancestry:

'''Legal Record''': "UK, Articles of Clerkship, 1756-1874"<br/>The National Archives of the UK (TNA); Kew, Surrey, England; Court of King's Bench: Plea Side: Affidavits of Due Execution of Articles of Clerkship, Series I; Class: KB 105; Piece: 6<br/>{{Ancestry Sharing|51051452|7b22746f6b656e223a227832554930463732386747654672552b396e2b56374b46545a5a4331755077456552346441524952736c593d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d}} - {{Ancestry Record|2380|13396}} (accessed 20 December 2025)<br/>Clerk's Name: Richard Ellwood; Clerk's Father: James Ellwood; Attorney: Henry Dixson; Filing Date: 10 Nov 1791; Parish or Town: Castle Sowerby; County: Cumberland.

Thanks Rosie,

That is interesting! Attorney at Law doesn't really fit in with my farmer ancestors! Also his father Mark died in 1795!! So where did the money come from to pay for his education!

Hi,

Does anyone have access to the marriage licences of Penrith?

If so could you please lookup the ML of:

Richard Ellwood and Jane Whelpdale who married 31 May 1802 at St Andrew's church in Penrith Cumberland. They married by licence according to their marriage record in Freeregs.

Thanks

Gigi

Hi

The Thomas was most likely Mark's elder brother who lived at Sandriggs in Dufton. Thomas died in 1775 in Dufton.

Hi ColC,

Thanks for that. Didn't know that their marriage was in Freereg.

You have to be careful as in this period there were other Marks in the area:

Mark Ellwood marr Elizabeth Egleston 1776 in Morland. Children: Mary b 1776 Morland, William b1778 Long Marton, Mark b 1786 Kirkby Stephen & William b 1787 (possibly). This Mark was the son of William and Mary Hall.

Best regards

Gigi

Westmorland / Re: ELLWOOD Family of Dufton & Brough/u/Stainmore

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat!

I am diectly descended from Mark Ellwood and Ann Loadman. My Ellwood tree goes back to Edward Ellwood who died in 1591 in Dufton. His wife was Elyne who died in 1597 in Dufton. I have researched a lot of the side brances as well, not just my direct line. I have accumulated quite a bit of Ellwood data over the years. My mother was an Ellwood from Crosby Ravensworth.

Regards

Gigi

PS I have seen your private message and responded to the email address you provided.

Hi

The record date was 1788. I imagined it was a hamlet. Wouldn't have been anything grand.

Bridge House in Murton looks nice. Maybe this is it and the house has been much improved since 1788!

Thanks

Hi All,

In a FindMyPast burial record the residence is Bridgehouse, Appleby. The family were from Hilton. Does anyone know where Bridgehouse is? Cannot find it on google, Genuki....

Thanks

Gigi
