I am interested in John CROGGON who is shown as grandson of Thomasin CROWLE in her Will of 11 November 1819; she was buried in St Gluvias 9 August 1820.

Thomasin was Thomasin JORDAN a widow when she married James CROWLE (a widower) in 1797. She was about 50 when she married James and as far as I know there were no children from this marriage.

The will also mentioned a son John JORDAN and a daughter Ann DUNSTAN of Thomasin who were the executors of the Will.

I have not been able to ascertain any information about Thomasin's first marriage or her maiden name. James CROWLE first marriage was to Jane HOCKING in Creed on 7 June 1756.

Hello Pauline

Did you manage to resolve your problem.

I have now located my great grandfather Arthur STEVENS in the 1871 census as being at East Hill House, Wandsworth. He is age 9.

It would appear he was at the school as his father was injured during the Crimea War and it looks as if he has died (possibly from his war wounds) after he was discharged from the Army in 1863 after completing 21 years service. I have not been able to locate either his mother or father in the 1871 census and this is probably why he is at this school.

I earlier believed he may have attended a Blue Coat School however he could not be located in Christs Hospital records and now I can see why.

I would like to find out how long he was at the school and also if they have any information about what happened to his parents (when they died etc).

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

David (in New Zealand)

Thanks for the comments.

I did purchase some certificates a few years ago but all proved not relevant.

Your suggestions has reminded me I must have a look at information now available on 1837 on-line and freebmd.

Hi

I had very little response and nothing was resolved.

It is possible Arthur (Ernest) was at a Blue Coat School at this time although I have not been able to confirm that he attended the school that later moved south of London.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1871 census - STEVENS
« on: Tuesday 06 September 05 00:57 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the following family in the 1871 census in the London/Middlesex area:
George STEVENS born c1822 Drewsteignton, Devon
Elizabeth STEVENS born c1825 Drewsteignton
Elizabeth STEVENS born c1850 London
William George STEVENS born c1853 Chichester, Sussex
James Henry born c1858 London
Arthur Ernest STEVENS born c1861 London

I have their details from the 1861 census and for William George and Arthur Ernest in  the 1881 census. William George has been located in the 1871 census. Parents are missing in the 1881 census so I am presuming they are dead.

I am particularly interested in locating Arthur Ernest STEVENS who should be shown as age 9 in the 1871 census. Oral family interest indicates he may have attended a 'Blue Coat' or similar school. It could therefore be possible he is shown in the 1871 census as being at a boarding school and therefore may only be listed with his initials. I don't know if the parents are alive or dead at the 1871 census.

Also interested in Eva PAYNE born c1851 Southsea, Hampshire who married William George STEVENS.

Thanks

Thanks Ros

Wm George seems to be correct as he is still a waiter in the 1901 census.

Arthur Ernest possibly (called Ernest) should be around somewhere as he is in the 1881 census and didn't come out to Australia and then New Zealand until 1883.

The other two children could have died young as I haven't located them in the 1881 census.

There is a mention of a Lillie STEVENS in Arthur's 1883 diary, covering his trip from London to Australia, that shows her living in London. I haven't been able to establish if Elizabeth and Lillie are the same person.

Regards
