Thanks, the newspaper article is v interesting!

I was particularly keen to find out if any records exist from his time at St Joseph's. I have a pretty good idea of what he was doing from the point he got married, just wondered if records existed from the orphanage that might tell me more about the whereabouts of his mother, at what age he was discharged, where to etc.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks so much for the information.

Do you know how I would find out more about what happened to him after his birth? I'm interested to know when his mother left the workhouse, whether she took him with her or if he was there through to the age of 15, if he was transferred to an different orphanage, and so on.

I can find no record of either of them on the 1911 census.

Thanks again!

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / St Olave Bermondsey - Workhouse / School records

I'm hoping someone can help me track down some information about my uncle, James Fitzpatrick Kellard, who was born in 1905. From what I have been able to ascertain, he grew up in an Orphanage in Southwark, before being shipped to Canada to start a new life by the Southwark Guardians in July in 1921.

His birth records show him as being born at 38 Parish St, Horselydown, which I know was v close to the site of the St Olave Union Workhouse in Bermondsey, I'm just not sure if that means he was actually born in the workhouse, and where the Southwark Guardians come into the story.

I would love to find out more about his early life, in particular whether he spent all of his first 15 yrs in a workhouse/orphanage before going to Canada, what records exist of his family, why Canada was seen as his best option for him etc. Can anyone help?

I'm hoping someone can help me track down some information about my uncle, James Fitzpatrick Kellard, who was born in 1905. From what I have been able to ascertain, he grew up in a Catholic Orphanage in Southwark, before being shipped to Canada by the Southwark Guardians in July in 1921. By September 1921 he had been shipped back, with his future address noted as St Joseph's Orphanage in Kent.

I would love to know if any records exist that confirm his time there, what family he might still have had, what might have happened to him after that etc. Can anyone help?
