I'm hoping someone can help me track down some information about my uncle, James Fitzpatrick Kellard, who was born in 1905. From what I have been able to ascertain, he grew up in an Orphanage in Southwark, before being shipped to Canada to start a new life by the Southwark Guardians in July in 1921.
His birth records show him as being born at 38 Parish St, Horselydown, which I know was v close to the site of the St Olave Union Workhouse in Bermondsey, I'm just not sure if that means he was actually born in the workhouse, and where the Southwark Guardians come into the story.
I would love to find out more about his early life, in particular whether he spent all of his first 15 yrs in a workhouse/orphanage before going to Canada, what records exist of his family, why Canada was seen as his best option for him etc. Can anyone help?
