Berwickshire / Re: Alexander (or James?) Russell or Russel working at Gordon 1807

I beleive Greenknowe was owned by the Lyals  -  the sister of an ancestor married into the family in the 1840s.  Greenknowe is near Greenlaw - and I have a memory of an ancient tower on the land (long time since I was there, as a tourist!).  Robert Lyal (my "aunt"'s husband ) was the son of William Lyal who was probably a contemporary of your Russell, but I have no direct information.

Spark

The Reformation was way before 1842 - so I think the info you give is misleading.   Yes post Reformation many RC churches transformed into C of England churches.

Its dedication is beleived to be pre Reformation but the church that stands on the site may be that vintage and/or restored/rebuilt during Victorian times.....

But OCR in my limited experience still requires spell checking - and proof reading which is not the same thing - so does it really save time and effort?  In my view, no. if the error rate is as high as this one is!

And, Ibi, what course do you run?

"occupier" - obvious now you have pointed it out when I looked again just now at the pdf  :-[

and to answer your second post - definitely a rhetorical question as we ALL know the answer!

and a request to be able to report errors on all items

Ibi

John Knox b approx 1796 in Greenlaw, and lived his whole life there. 1861 census is the offending one (I have a pdf of the actual census which is why Iknow about the correct and additional words) and the earlier 1851 census where master is translated as "mustic"

I would love  know if any error checking is ever done........

Scottish census :
"Retined Mershonat & Acculine Of 10 Acres Of Land" ... ???

Well its "Retired Merchant and feuer and [?] of 10 acres of land"   - I'll give them the "A" word as it is illegible to the non specialist but I suspect it s a form of land holding in Scotland........

In an earlier census they have misread the word "master"  as well....  ::)

Australia / Re: Departure Records UK
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 09:23 GMT (UK)  »
There was a department under the auspices of  the Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners who helped migrants - well helped may be a bit of a euphemism - as there were very tight constraints about who they thought should build this new colony.   There are records about them in (UK) Parliamentary papers but so far as I remember these contain no detail of who was on board unless there were real problems with behaviour of crew/passengers.  HOwever this department's name may give a lead in  the (UK) National Archive about where to find information if they were assisted by the Government scheme.

Also there were private organisations like those run by Caroline Chisholm and John Lang - not sure if either were operating by 1854 nor whether there were others - who assisted migrants, so knowing who supported them may well give you access to information.  Was the ship chartered for example?

try this

http://www.aberdareonline.co.uk/content/public/history/cynon_valley_a_walk_in_the_past/page_3.asp

Railway seems to have come in 1846 - this is about page 4 of a walk around Aberdare and if you go back you will see the iron works and the Aberdare estate seem to be the big employers

Hope that helps
