Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Richard Potts POLE born 1843 Huntingdonshire

It may be to late to add this to this thread...

The William son of John (my ancestor - I spent ages trying to prove it was this William rather than the son of Faithful - this thread helps prove it) was a thatcher in Halse in 1861. This points to the William son of Faithful being the one you are looking for.

Also if your William died in New Zealand, this helps prove the William on the burial records in Halse is William son of John - so thank you.

Thanks Rosie and Trish, this helps place Faithfull Strong born 1718, I can't see any evidence for this being Halse and can't find him on the parish records for Halse. I guess he could have been born elsewhere and moved to Halse by the time he married. Interesting that they were both living in Halse but married in Skilgate which must be around 10 miles from Halse.

I hadn't come across FreeREG either, so thanks for introducing me to a new tool.

Next problem with the Greens!

I've found James Green baptised 1832 in Bishops Lydeard, along with siblings Elizabeth (1827), Mary Ann (1830) and possibly another James (1823). All born to James Green and Maria.

I've searched everywhere for James and Maria Green (and name variations), no record of marriage in Bishops Lydeard. I've searched in 1841 and 1851 census records both around Bishops Lydeard and around Wells as James jnr married in Wells in 1861 so the family might have moved. No joy.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

I've found a family of Greens in Bishops Lydeard a generation older. George and Catherine with children William (1761), Betty (1765), Anne (1767), George (1770) and John (1775). James Snr could be the son of one of these, ages would be about right, but no records of a birth in Bishops Lydeard.

All thoughts as to what to try next gratefully received.

Thanks,

Andy

Somerset Lookup Requests / Green, Wells/Tiverton/Bishops Hull

Can anyone help with a lookup of the 18881 Census?

I am researching James Green b about 1832 in Bishops Lydeard and Harriett Barber b about 1830 in (Kenton). However I can't find Kenton, this comes from the 1871 census.

On the 1881 census, I've found 3 of their children, Harry Green (age 19 b. Wells), Kate Green (age 14 b Tiverton) and James Green (age 12 B Tiverton); I happy that these are the right children as ages and places of birth match. On the transcript of the 1881 census, these three are recorded as son or daughter, but no parents are recorded.

If anyone has access to pictures of the original census for Bishops Hull in Somerset, could you look these up for me and see if the parents are recorded? I am particularly keen to see the place of birth of Harriett.

Thanks,

Andy

Somerset Lookup Requests / Strong, Halse

I am researching the Strong family from Halse, West Somerset. From a transcript of the parish record I have Grace Strong born 1755 to Faithful Strong and Elizabeth Brumham. I can't find any record of the birth of either Faithful or Elizabeth, or their marriage. On Ancestry, other people have Faithful born 1718, Halse and Elizabeth born about 1720. Can anyone help me with evidence for either Faithfull or Elizabeth?

Many thanks,

Andy

Somerset Lookup Requests / Pole - Combe Florey and Halse
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 20:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching the Pole family and looking for help to get back another generation. I have Richard Pole born 1753 Combe Florey to Lawrence Pole and Mary Hill from a transcript of the parish register. On Ancestry, other people have Lawrence Pole born 1718, Combe Florey to Richard Pole (1696) and Sarah (1698). I can't find any records for Lawrence's baptism however. Does anyone have any evidence that will help me prove Lawrence was born in 1718?

Thanks,

Andy

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Potter Wentnor

Hi Fiona,

I have also left a reply on your Hertfordshire post with some detail, before I read this one.

I am trying to prove wether my ancestor, Jane Potter from The Bog Wentnor, was the daughter of Thomas Potter and Mary or Richard Potter and Ann.  Both families Lead Miners at The Bog 1841 onwards.

I have found a record of Richard Potter baptised 13 May 1810 in Wentnor to Jonathan Potter and Jane.

This could well be the same Jonathan and Jane mentioned here at Hyssington (about 5 miles from The Bog). So Thomas and Richard could be bothers.

Hi Fiona,

We might have some common ancestors and it looks like you are ahead of me in the research.

I am researching Jane Potter, my great, great, great grandmother, who was born The Bog, Wentnor (near Shelve) 1837 ish (going by census dates). She married James Bright and lived in Clun.

There were two Jane Potters at The Bog, one to Thomas and Mary (your ancestors) this is the most likely one to be my ancestor, going by age. But also one to Richard and Ann who was a couple of years older.

I went to visit The Bog, don't know if you know the area, The Bog was an old lead mining village in the Stipperstone Hills. It's in the parish of Wentnor, but quite some distance from Wentnor, however, it's much closer to Shelve, so as I'm sure you've found out, the children were christened in Shelve. They will have lived in old miners cottages, these are all demolished now, as is the mine but there is a visitors centre and tea rooms which has some old photos of the mine and cottages.

So your link to a Francis Woodfield in Shelve is a strong possibility.

You might be able to help me. You seem to have found details for the marriage of Thomas and Mary Potter, can you send me details? Also Mary's death, I had guess 1850 as this was when son Thomas was born but father Thomas was recorded as a widow in 1851. Maybe she died in childbirth?

The big mystery for me is to prove which Jane Potter is my ancestor, if you have any evidence to support the Jane Potter from The Bog (Wentnor) that married James Bright is the one born to Thomas and Mary rather than to Richard and Ann that would be amazing.

Thanks,

Andy
