Many thanks to all. Any idea why they would be described as "Inmates"?   Jim

Midlothian / 1911 Edinburgh/Midlothian Prison census

The 1911 census of Edinburgh/Midlothian contains a Frank Aitken b. 1862. he is shown as an inmate. Can anyone tell me if there is a source I can look up to find the reason for his incarceration and if his being an inmate in 1911 is the reason he ended up in Australia in July, 1911? Many thanks,  Jim

Hi Dinie,

Thanks for that link. Life must have been very tough for people living in Rennie Lodge when it was a workhouse in the 1800's. I'm afraid I haven't been very successful at finding information on my Course family ancesters who all lived in the Emberton, Olney, Ravenstone area, except information contained in the census. Apparently no grave sites have been found. My grandmother, who was born in Northamptonshire, was the first of her family to come to Canada in 1903. Many thanks again,  Jim

Hi,

I have a John Course, 51 and Sarah Course, 41 in the 1841 census. in Buckingham. It appears they were in the District Newport Pagnell Workhouse at the time. Can anyone give me information on this workhouse and if there is the complete 1841 census available for that workhouse? Many thanks,  Jim

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Re: William Ramsay cemetery lookup at Tarves
« on: Sunday 30 December 07 22:45 GMT (UK)  »
Steve, thanks for that. In the marriage record of William Ramsay & Helen (nee Laing) it said he was from Tarves...not necessarily born there. Despite the fact that both children Helen & Alexander (my great grandfather) were born at Belhelvie, I believe William remained and worked in Aberdeen. He was described as a Merchant.  Alas....he's not buried in Belhelvie with Helen and her parents & family...the Laings.
I've been on Scotlandspeople and dug up what I think are the possible William Ramsays and none seem to fit. I think my best chance is finding an MI  or the death record in the Parish records. Many thanks,   Jim

Thanks to both of you for the info. Helen is shown as a widow in 1851 census. William was last recorded in 1843 birth of a son being at Catto Square, Aberdeen. Although the marriage record of 1840 showed he was from Tarves I've found no birth record as to where he was born c 1819. I believe he's buried in a cemetery in the city of Aberdeen but which one and the fact the cemeteries don't seem to be indexed is my conundrum. Many thanks,  Jim
